Roleplaying an Ammatar, How Frowned Upon Would That Be? (Moved Thread)

Hello,

New to EVE and I've been looking around what lore sources I could find and trying to locate the player bases views to see what was acceptable for RP in EVE. Despite searching everywhere (at least it feels like that), I have not been able to find anything that definitively states how players would feel about someone roleplaying an Ammatar, but making a Minmatar to do so.

I understand that the Ammatar have essentially had their culture become indistinguishable from that of Amarr's, the character I'm hoping to make would embrace the Amarr way of life fully. My reasoning for wanting to use a Minmatar character opposed to an Amarr character is because of one simple thing - customization options.

I like to make my character's look like me as much as possible, and every so often a game will have a race who's ideals match up with me to T (the Amarr) but for whatever reason, they either cannot have darker skin tones or coarse hair. As I'm sure many of the more experience EVE players are aware, the Minmatar have the only Dreadlock hair option and the darkest skin tones available.

I don't know how genetics are set to work in this game, but I tend to rely on conventional science that states dark skin overrides lighter skin. I find it difficult to believe that the Ammatar would not have some among their people who still held prominent Minmatar features or a mix, which Is really what I want to go for.

I'd like my character to have father who was True Amarrian and mother who was of strictly Ammatar decent. Why you might ask, to pay homage to my own life, being that I am a multiracial individual. Not to worry, while I do make an advent attempt to make my character resemble myself as much as possible. I do so within the confines and parameters of the particular game's lore that I am dealing with. I am a very apathetic individual in real life so mixing my character's feelings with mine has never been an issue - I can separate ooc from ic.

That said, the question is: how much would I get shunned by the rp community if I did this? I want a character with Dreadlocks and brown skin, but who is loyal to the Amarr, is of both Ammatar and True Amarrian decent. Of course, the true Amarrian side of his family has essentially disowned him, but I would really like to know what the communities thoughts are on this before I go ahead and do it.

I primarily just want to know that I'm not breaking lore or creating some abomination from an ooc perspective. As in, its something the players could see as a plausible happening. I'm aware that some Amarr purists would be absolutely horrified to know my character existed.

Roleplaying an Ammatar...

I'm fairly certain players do it successfully, though they may define that success differently from one another.

For starters, in my opinion the Amarr RP scene is likely the most robust among the empire factions. Lots of people and material to work with, many of whom I have found to be quite welcoming. These people will know the particulars better than myself. While I am not part of that scene, I don't see an issue with the bloodline mingling. I think the True Amarr get stuffy when it comes to the royal houses having pure blood, but for some holders and commoners, I can't imagine that it would be unheard of for a True Amarr to take an Ammatar wife or concubine. Not only in parts of the Holy Empire such as Derelik, but even within the Republic, there are Minmatar who practice the Amarr faith. It is not unheard of for someone of 'Minmatar appearance' to roleplay an Amarr loyalist, descendant, and/or Empire citizen.

Hopefully this will encourage you to try it out. As more knowledgeable Amarr roleplayers respond, I believe you will get a good idea of where your character could land among them.

Since Minmatar can often be of mixed ancestry (comes up in quite a few Minmatar-centric Chronicles), since the Nefantar, Starkmanir and Thukker tribes are currently facing a rocky potential reintegration into the Republic, and since CCP has provided us with some sexy Nefantar ship SKINs, it would not be difficult at all.

The biggest problem would be justifying your character's education in a Minmatar institution. Perhaps your character attempted to re-integrate but faced persecution from their fellow Minmatar since they practiced the Amarr faith despite their freedmen status. Perhaps they gave up on the idea and returned to where they felt they belonged, among and subservient to the faithful. You could fly Amarr ships, or put Nefantar SKINs on your Minmatar ships to maintain that Golden Fleet aesthetic.

Playing a race traitor has already been done. You might catch some (in-character) flak from Minmatar RPers (or at least, those who are not aware of the problems the Nefantar are facing during their attempts to reintegrate into the Republic), but I can't imagine you will find many critics among the Amarr and Caldari RPers.

Sounds like a workable character concept. That said I'm not sure the character would've been disowned by the Amarr side of his family, just not seen as a full member of it.

To explain the source of your training (assuming you don't want to ignore it as some have) what if your character had a rebellious teenage phase and ended up going to the Republic? There it's possible he would've been tested for the genetic potential to be a pilot and admitted to flight school as a result of that. Possibly with hidden funding from his family. Possibly through raw talent & a scholarship.

The Elder Fleet raid (which only happened a few years ago) might have caused him to decide his true loyalty lay with his birthplace. Of course Republicans (like me) would likely despise you for taking our training and then betraying us.

First: Do you want to play Ammatar, or Nefantar? I take it you've read your lore from the way that you post, but just to make this sure - you want to be of those still aligned to the Amarr, or those who have returned to the Tribes?

Second: I don't see why not, either way. It is roleplay, you can explain away your starting corporation if you so wish, or just completely ignore it just as well. At least I don't much care if you come from the RMS but claim to be taught by the Amarr. It's your choice anyway.

Wow! Thanks a bunch for all the great feedback and responses. It's really helped me to figure out what I want to do with my character. I'm glad I asked this question before proceeding and I look forward engaging with the community further.

On a final note and to answer your question, I do mean Ammatar and not the Nefantar that they once were/are apart of. I've read a little bit, just some light stuff to get me familiar with the game's universe, where I fit in it, etc. The basics. Typically if a game's story doesn't make sense or if my place in the story doesn't make sense- I don't get invested. EVE has an absolutely rich universe and I am looking forward to getting to know it inside and out. in short though, yes I do mean to rp the Nefantar/Ammatar still aligned with Amarr. Not the ones that returned to the Tribes.
