Ah, the Shakes.

I still remember my first PVP solo fight, like 7 years ago. I still remember the heart pumping, the adrenaline rushing, and the "oh ****" feeling.

Nothing will beat solo PVP, NOTHING!

In an odd way I feel like when I start approaching a ship, the target lock is beeping, my MWD is going off. It feels like a battle charge. Like "alright mother ****** let's do this". And the alarms start going off. The whole thing is exciting and immersive. Especially if it's a close fight and things start going down to the wire and you don't know who's gonna win. I love it. And I don't even mind sucking at the moment.

Greetings!

Some quick-response thoughts here too:

1) Homework must be done before the fight.
This is not the case if you are not familiar with all ships and their fits yet, but learning game mechanic must become your second nature (learn turret tracking, engagement distances, missile damage calculations, resistance types of T2 ships, EWAR/Utility modules specs etc..)

2) Use maneuvering to create temporary advantage.
Often, you will be outnumbered and 'frontal assault' will fail most of the times.
But good thing is - you don't have to be the most powerful all the time - only some time.
So, divide your enemies and kill them one by one by warping between FW plexes, showing you going there at zero, but jumping at 100km instead or using stargate aggro mechanic or etc.
This is like chess - you are trying to predict your enemy and move your ship into better position.
There is the catch here - you need good DPS (damage per second) to kill fast enough. And that is why I strongly advice you to check 3rd option...

3) Use Destroyer class ships.
(serious IMHO here, sorry in advance!)
Seriously. You need these endorphins in the very beginning of your gaming experience. Flying "dessie" is much more rewarding IMHO vs flying frigate (don't forget, we are speaking about solo).
But beware to fly common dessie fits (or fly with care) - even if you have incoming T1 frigate on scan and he is pro, he's probably know what he's doing.
Try some uncommon fits, for example: neutron blaster algos with magstabs, 10mn ab algos, dualweb arty thrasher, all-dps dragoon (yup, no neuts here), rail catalyst (hello, mr. navy slicer!), gank sebo/web coercer.

4) Oh, almost forgot - overheat guns. Always.
Not overheating is a serious crime and will punished by immediate ship destruction!

I dig these. I have flown a few destroyers and have learned precisely what you mean by the fact that I've still managed to get outclassed by some frig flyers. That being said i'll look at these fits you listed. Particularly interested in the dualweb arty thrasher, and i'm a big fan of the algos. I'll have to give those a run. Overheating is definitely a must I'll agree there. However I have committed the obvious mistake of not doing it. Still getting used to managing my modules effectively in fast paced fighting, but it's all part of the process. Another thing i'm getting used to is always checking ship infos on d scan before I get into the fight as well as researching the pilot. Dank tips though man.

Start your solo PVP in a ship that you can afford to lose 10-20 times before you start to see significant improvements.

Congrats on the kill!

Some excellent advice above. My experience of solo is long quiet periods roaming, looking for an ideal target, followed by intense moments no other game can deliver.

I found training up cloaking to covert cloak level, and flying a cloaky ship (Astero, Helios, etc) helps both the search, and the sudden ambush of the unsuspecting target.

Being solo it helps to fly under the radar, and be able to select your targets.

Also - look into the Pirates Little Helper app: it lists the people in the system, with the average number of attackers in their fights - its a good way to quickly identify solo pvp'ers

ProTip:

You first need to realize that solo PvP, especially with the smaller ship hulls, is very much paper, rock, scissor. This means, your build (SP + implants + ship + mods, etc) versus their build. The skill IMHO is not really management of systems as much as it would be for cruisers and above, but more about position, speed and so forth that impact your DPS, evasion and exit strategies.

That being said, focusing on builds that are hard counters to other popular builds is the best tip I could give. The worst advice would be to just fit a popular fit and fight anything for fun. That's not to say that fun is not important, but it's not winning either.

That's just me!

So, I recently decided to participate in the principal activity in Eve, and that is PvP

I have been roaming around, looking for fights with my hands shaking.
Just now, I came out of a gate, and a target presented itself. I hit orbit, MWD and my scram after successfully targeting him (hard to do with shaky hands!)

It all happened so fast, I barely had time to register. I do know I had the target (a malediction) in armor when it all went down
I blew up, which, I'll be honest, I fully expected

I hit warp to save my pod, and typed "gf" as I departed.

I then looked at the kill report.
Shot down by sentry guns, and nothing else >.<

Lesson learned! Dont agress non-blinky people at gates, even in low sec

I'm still a bit shaky. But heck, now I want more.

Take a look at eft's dps graph. You want to know what ranges and transversals you and other ships will do the most damage. In low sec there are basically 3 important ranges. 1)Point blank. 2) Inside scram range - orbit about 7 km. And 3) 24 k for disruptor kiting. Have your optimal that you strive for and a backup plan if you can't get it.

For example if you are in a brawler and can't catch a kiting ship then you may be able to load long range ammo and at least force them to warp out. Or use a td and force them in for a fight.

I'm not sure if pyfa has a dps graph.

Edit: If you can get a comparable buffer tank go with that instead of an active tank. Even if it is not quite as strong eft wise you will be able to be better focus on things like range and overheating mods without worrying about pulsing reps and capacitor. It can take allot off your plate which means fewer mistakes. I am not sure how viable this is with the current meta though.

Make faction war occupancy pvp instead of pve https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=53815&#post53815
