Is there a 'Moon Goo for Dummies'?

I tend to be long-winded, so I'll keep this short as best I can...

I have the opportunity to mine goo for the first time - I will be 'The Guy' in the corp running this POS on a moon for the purpose of mining goo & turning a profit for the corp. I've managed a POS before, but someone guided me step-by-step on setup, etc - I just had to empty the silos, basically. THIS time I'll be working from the ground up with little to no guidance.

Is there a "For Dummies" guide out there that will explain the how-to's and what-for's? Hoping for something simple like the one for P.I. by Korai Iarok.

The thing that got me cross-eyed was when I began reading up on things (specifically Unrefined Platinum Technite) I found there is a huge ISK difference between that and the refined Platinum Technite. I don't understand why. I found an old post from 4 years ago that was explaining alchemy and it just confused me worse.

Can someone point me in the right direction and/or explain the basics of what I should be shooting for here? Fuzzwork's website seems to say that I'd be almost 96mil in the red if I were to make it, but I think that's including the cost to buy the base materials if I am reading it correctly.

To clarify, I'd be running reactions on a moon that has both Cobalt & Vanadium available, and would have access to a corp owned POS with 0 tax for corp members.

Also, does the size of the moon matter as to how much can be extracted in each cycle, or no? I ask because I could get one of two moons that have these materials, and am wondering if there is any difference between the two.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

I might be able to give some advice, although I will admit I have no practical experience with POSes and reactions, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

The reason for the difference between the Platinum Technite reaction and Unrefined Platinum Technite is the amount of reaction product they produce. Platinum Technite produces 200 platinum technite per run out of 100 Platinum and 100 Technetium. Its alchemical cousin produces one Unrefined Platinum Technite, which, if you reprocessed with Scrapmetal Processing V and an upgraded Minmatar outpost, you might get 20 platinum technite and 90some platinum. Someone reacting Platinum and Technite can make ten times as much as you can per hour, and since every hour of running a POS costs fuel (Fuzzwork does not include fuel costs in reaction profits, which are around 250M per month for a medium tower and 500M for a large) you'll earn far more avoiding alchemy and just importing missing moon goo.

Also, from what I've heard the market for simple reactions tends to be volatile, and may move slowly. I'd do some market research before committing to a reaction. It might be wiser to make complex reactions, since those are always in demand for T2 components. You will likely need multiple large towers for that though.

Moon size or material abundance has no effect on the amount of moon goo extracted. The moon either has it or it doesn't, and if it has it you can extract 100 units of goo per hour from it.

That clears up damn near everything! Thank you so much! Clearly, if I go with this moon, it would be most profitable to import Technetium & carbon polymers to react everything into Fullerides for maximum profit.

With your post, I was able to go back to fuzzwork's page & make perfect sense of it now. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Remember that a simple reaction outputs 200 units, while a complex reactor only consumes 100. Since carbon polymers are easy to make (you only need a moon with 2 R4 minerals, which are easy to find), I'd set up two towers into something like this:

It'll help you use your resources more easily and reduce the logistics of transporting carbon polymers.

Dummies don't get moon goo.

In general, you will likely find that reactions are too much effort for too little profit.

Even with a decent moon, maintenance can be a PITA ... and then there are siphons to check and clear.
