What are the best frigates for new/returning players for missioning and or PVP. Across my accounts I own Merlin, Tristan, Slasher, Probe and Rifter. No T2 frigs. I can buy whatever is needed but not sure what is worthwhile to outfit now. Can fly Gallente, Caldari and Minmatar.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I can only talk about the Minmatar ships you listed since I only fly Minmatar.

The Slasher is good for small fleet PvP action. It's mainly a fast tackle ship which can quickly engage and hold a target while the main combat ships in fleet apply the DPS.

The Probe ship is the Minmatar racial starter ship for exploration which can also work as a scout in small fleet ops. It has good scanning bonus for both Core and Combat probes along with a bonus for Hacking.

The Rifter is the main combat Frigate. It can be used for both solo and fleet PvP / PvE content. It can put out some good offensive DPS and still fit a good defensive tank as well as maintain speed and agility for up close in your face combat action.

When you say you can fly Gallente, Caldari and Minmatar, do you mean you can pilot the ships you mentioned or are you actually referring to your ability to fit all these ships to their strengths?

A Merlin would require shield tanking and hybrid guns, for a Rifter you typically want an armor tank and projectile weapons and for the Tristan you would need at least drone skills.

If you really meant that you can fly all of these ships with a proper fit, I would recommend to fit all of them for PvP (except the Proble, which is better used for exploring) and take them to PvP one after another. You will lose all of them, probably very fast. But that way you start to get used to the adrenaline rush which might hamper you quite a bit (the effect was much bigger than I anticipated when I started to PvP). With some luck, you also might get an idea to what is working and how.

However, if I were you, I would look for some like minded people to fly with (actually I am you in this regard, atm P). Join a newbie friendly but established PvP corp. Maybe one of the big ones. It's likely that they will have ship doctrines, which means they will tell you what to fly and how you should fit your ship. Learn from them. Make your own experience.

Rifter does better with a passive shield tank, doesn't cut down on speed or agility.

Thanks for responses. I can fly and fit all the ships I noted. My Cadari was a mission and exploration alt for level 3/4 and data site hacking. Gallente was crosstrained on Tristan and Merlin and woke up in the Merlin after 8 years. The new api system actually let me find the account which was so old I had no name. Minmatar was an Industrial for ship building and fitted for Scythe, Stabber and Mining Barge and haulers.

Just not sure if the old ships are space worthy now or if new ships have taken over. So if there are better rebalanced frigs or cruisers would be happy for the info.Big smile

All the t1 frigates are in a pretty good place right now. They have their own strengths and weaknesses of course, but if you play to those strengths and exploit your enemy's weaknesses you can do well with any race. Some of my favorites are the Breacher, Atron, and Condor. Tristans are quite strong as well.

For PVE....I really don't know or care. Roll
