The Race Debate

Amarr roleplay is the richest because there are so many possibilities for what your hidden motivations may be when you're in a repressive regime. Example.

If you're into RP, by the way, click the Chronicles index and read them, at your leisure. EVE has a rich lore background, it's just hidden, like everything is in this game.

I wont judge the rp - each to their own - but if that is your thing and if you really like amarr - you might want to look up cva and provi - there are groups there that are very well known for it - although I am not sure how much of it still goes on.

Race only matters if you forever remain an Alpha clone. Omega clones can fly anything. So your starting race only barely matters in giving you a slight advantage when upgrading to Omega and continuing to train the skills beyond the limits of Alpha state.

So I suggest picking whatever tickles your fancy. If you like Eve enough to put time into it, you will want to upgrade and open the whole skill tree, and you will invariably end up flying other races' ship lines.

If you think beyond Alpha- then remember that most ships larger than Destroyer have drone bays. Drones are the one weapon every single race uses, and Gallente (and some Amarr) ships have bonuses for them. Making Drones a very high bang-for-the-buck skill tree to invest in. You can go from day one to blinged battleships in drone boats, and fill many different fleet roles to boot.
Gallente use Hybrid guns, which they share with Caldari. So again, there is a synergy there that favors Gallente from the start. All the races have some form of this- Minmatar and Caldari missile ships- but Drones remain a universal truth for the majority of large hulls.

In terms of ships themselves- Gallente also have a strong line for both PvE and PvP. Their drone branch of ships are excellent platforms.

Therefore in terms of pure starting advantage, I would go with Gallente. But again, it really won't matter once you go Omega.

1) Choose faction based on appearance/lore.
2) Choose armor or shield.
3) Choose preferred weapon platform or specialist role.
(I recommend starting with drones, cos ubiquitous and effective vs most EWAR/Neuts. Missiles as second, cos also present on many hulls, effective vs EWAR/Neuts. This opens up your options if you should choose to PvE as well to earn isk.)
4) Look through hulls to find the ones you like that have your armor/shield choice, chosen weapon platform and/or role.
5) Start training specifically towards them.
6) Choose an area of space suitable to your desired activities.
7) Create a character background representative of the above.
8) Evolve in EVE and make your characters ambitions come true.

If alpha then pick wisely as you can't mix and match. I'm Amarr even if we are nerfed alphas, or that's what I hear anyways. I'm planning on subbing soon so for me it's about lore. Being Amarr let's me play as the evil slave empire that's falling. I can be a bitter avenger of the Empire and try to bring glory back. I can be the bad guy and have fun.

Some want the isk and riches and that's cool but I tried that on my original account and it was boring. Stacking isk shouldn't be a measuring stick to your success. Pick what's going to make you happy when you log in. Of course isk is needed but if you're good at the path you choose then isk will come.

Fun could be just learning the game while skills train at first. You can learn how to gank in lowsec. You can learn how to gank in highsec. You can learn how to fit a venture and gas mine. You can do missions along with fw so you can earn lp so you can either use or sell to market.

Not going to happen fast but be patient and have fun. You can skill up in alpha to a certain point but it's not trial based and you can slowly stack isk until you've saved enough for a plex or pay for a sub.

And even an alpha can small gang roam if you know how to setup and execute orders.
