I have had the pleasure of knowing and playing alongside Japanese Eve players for many years now, they are a great group to play alongside and bring a great number of people to the Au tz community as a whole.

I sign this letter in the hope we can help them get the continued support they need just like many other countries and cultures from the global EVE community.

There are many problems with localization in Eve, hopefully this letter, along with the one from the Russian speaking players, brings it to the attention of CCP.

Personal opinion (also as a person working as translator). When you play together with people from other countries, English is the Lingua Franca. If someone starts talking to you about some localized ship/module/NPC/ammo, it becomes increasingly hard to communicate with other people.

As a translator, it is oftentimes incredibly hard to get necessary context for certain parts of the translation (for instance when module names and descriptions are being translated separated from each other), which results in sub-optimal translations. Better organization of translation texts and somewhat more interaction with the community during the localization process could go a long way to improve things, especially in languages with limited support. Although, this can also open a box of worms because most ordinary people have no clue whatsoever about localization and their input could actually lead worse results.

I'd miss our Japanese friends if they weren't around.

Localisation seems to be a knotty problem. CCP as a company isn't large enough to employ a native speaker of every language as a "CCP Falcon Jr, GM, Translator and prime-time help channel moderator".

With the current ease of patching maybe it's time for CCP to crowdsource a chunk of translation? Do a first publish using the current process, solicit alternatives submitted to an open section. Then involve a couple of respected community members (corp CEOs or their nominated person?) to pick a favourite and use that in place of the first cut version.

The process needs to be good enough to weed out the google translates and boaty mcboatfaces but loose enough that it doesn't get mired in a preference over turn of phrase. If several are good enough then hash their words, use each hash as a random seed for an AI fight of rifters at the sun.
