Didn't see a PI subforum - this was the closest I could get, so hope it's ok.

So I've decided to make high-tech transmitters, a P3 commodity. This is what I need to do:

P1s -> P2s
=========
chiral + plasmoids -> transmitter
industrial fibers + oxidizing compound -> polyaramids

P2s -> P3
========
transmitter + polyaramids -> high-tech transmitters

I did consult various resources on the web but didn't find exactly what I was looking for. So rather than come up with something on the fly which would no doubt be sub-optimal, I'd like recommendations on setups. My guess is the same planets which mine out the P0s could produce the P1s (you can challenge that notion). But from there I'm not sure which approach to take. Can or should I have a single factory planet which makes both the P2s and also the P3s? Or should there be some other approach? Either way, can anyone show me some setups? Recommend some resources to look at?

I can currently do 5 planets, can always train up the skill for the 6th if necessary.

Thanks.

high sec? low? null?
you own the poco ?

in general if it's not your poco you want to make p0 to p2 on same planet then extract them out and sell.

With a 5 Planet setup on a single character this is a difficult build unless you are in wormhole or Nul space with the correct planets in system.

You will need:

Plasma or Lava planet for the Non-CS Crystals (Chiral) and Suspended Plasma (Plasmoids)
Temperate for Autotrophs (Industrial Fibers)
Gas for Reactive Gas (Oxidizing Compound)
Barren for the Production of the Polyaramids
Barren for the Production of the High-Tech Transmitters

To make this an efficient setup will require the Production of Transmitters on a Lava planet here you will extract the Non-CS and the Suspended Plasma, process these to the P1 and send them to an Advanced Processor to produce the P2 Transmitters.

Next you will set up the extraction of Autotrophs and basic production to Industrial Fibers.
Next you will set up a Gas planet to extract the Reactive Gas and use a basic production to make the Oxidizing Compound.

At this point you will set up one Barren planet to produce the Polyaramids by bringing the Industrial Fibers and the Oxidizing compounds from the extraction planets.

Lastly, set up the last barren planet with Advanced production modules to make the High Tech Transmitters. Bring in the Transmitters from the Lava planet, the Polyaramids from the Barren production planet.

This setup will require maintenance on either a daily or at least three times per week schedule to make enough profit to make it worth the effort involved.

PI can be, and is, and very good isk making endeavor, but it is not for the faint of heart. It requires effort, research, and solid work to make the good profits.

I'm going to assume you intend to work in highsec - at least to begin. High tech transmitters are not something I would try to make in highsec. you need to move stuff around too much and the import/export taxes will kill you. I am making robotics in highsec. it's a lot easier and a lot more useful - component in T2 drones and weapons.

My setup has 3 barren planets making mechanical parts and 3 lava planets making consumer electronics. 2 of the lava planets have a 3rd advanced processor to make the robotics. That means fewer extraction heads but it works. I import mechanical parts and enough consumer electronics to keep the robotics plant busy. With highsec planets the setup is not self sufficient but I have other characters that can contribute P2 as required. I'm making 144 units of robotics a day, all of which are consumed by drone production.

To make this work, you need good skills (6 planets, Command Center 5 and the Planetology skills to 4). You will also need Customs Code Expertise 5 to cut the NPC portion of the POCO tax in half. I am paying 6% to export my robotics - double what I pay in nullsec but still a whole lot better than buying P3 on the market!

These are wormhole planets I've located, all in the same system.

Will give the setups presented here some thought - thanks.

Basic rules of PI....

1: Always route to and from a buffer.
2: PI Chains predicated on mass hauling of P0 commodities are a path down which madness lies.

So, herewith my Extraction -> P1 setup, useable by Command Center Upgrades IV provided the planet isn't huge. The route is ECU->Silo->Factories->Launchpads. It takes me around ~4-5 days to fill up and export to a POCO.

For P1->P3, I use THIS setup which requires CCU V. Build it from the center->out. The red factories are making one P2, the yellow ones make the other P2 the Blue factories down the middle crack them together to make a P3 and there's a full input hopper for each P1. This will run for ~2 days before needing a refill. You can set this up as a P1-P2 plant and should be able to add a couple more factories in.

edit: putting some thought into minimising the time you'll spend in an Epithal hauling planet goo around is well worthwhile.

Very helpful - thanks for posting that.

One thing I've found is, I've run out of power to run enough extraction heads. I have 8 basic factories but can't really use them all because I can only get 4-5 extraction heads out. Would Command Center Upgrades V make enough of a difference for me to be able to get enough heads out to saturate the factories?

EDIT: By the way, can someone answer this? For instance, I'm scanning 3 gas giant planets right now. The one 'advertised' by the initial scan screen as having the most of a certain resource by far (the largest horizontal bar going across) has the least when I move the scan thing around to find the hotspots. And the one 'advertised' by the initial scan screen as having the least of a certain resource by far (the shortest horizontal bar going across) has the most when I move the scan thing around to find the hotspots. Care to explain?

what's the radius of the planet you're working on? have you got all your links nice and short by building your facilities as close together as possible? have you upgraded any links? (the one from the ECU to the Silo may need upgrading on rich hotspots).

There's enough powergrid for a CCU IV character to get that whole ECU/Silo/2xLaunchpad/8xBIF extraction facility running (Source: I have multiple CCU IV characters all running that setup).

You seem to be scanning Gas planets which have a nasty habit of being rather large. 'Show Info' on the planet and check the radius. Anything over around 20,000km and you're going to start running into powergrid issues from the sheer length of the links. You can still extract on such planets, but may need to settle for less heads/factories. I'd dump one launchpad from my extraction setup first, then lose a factory or two before reducing the number of heads I can deploy. Excess P0 just sits in the Silo and provides a slight buffer to keep the factories fed.

CCU V is very nice and I have it on my two factory planet managers.

It's weird. I have no idea what the problem was. I did everything correctly as far as clustering buildings together, etc. The only thing I can think is, I was running 2 extractor thingies because I had placed midway between 2 hotspots, and figured I'd **** both.

Anyway, tore down and completely redid everything, now with just 1 extractor. I was able to get 9 basic facilities up no problem, with enough extractor heads to feed all of them to max capacity. Everything now working well.

Thanks for all the great help.
