Request: Lag-free "Places" (Bookmarks)

I am consistently experiencing heavy lag when undocking, jumping a gate, making a new bookmark, dragging a bookmark (or even just accidentally grabbing it for drag). Trying different computers, different kinds of internet connections, emptying caches, the problem prevails. It has also nothing to do with bookmarks being shown in space, the lag stays.

That lag makes me about 5 to 10 seconds slower than everyone else doing the same thing. Let me illustrate: if I get someone warping in onto a gate at 1 AU, I might jump and try to tackle on the other side. The lag is so heavy that the other guy will already be able to jump through and start aligning before I regain control and be able to do anything. Other example: if I make a new bookmark the screen freezes for about 5 to 10 seconds before I can do anything.

The "fix" I have is to not have "Places" in "People & Places" open and basically avoid using bookmarks. I can only guess that my entire bookmarks are reloaded every time if I do any of the aforementioned things.

If I happen to need access to my bookmarks and change back to "Places" or make a new bookmark while warping or whatever, well there is the lag again, so this isn't really a fix at all.

I have just about 4000 bookmarks, which is basically nothing.

CCPlease fix it.

p.s. I am running on OSX client

Collapse the Personal Location folder if you are not using it? Only open if you need to use bookmarks from different systems. Helps a lot with making BMs or jumping...

Yes right, this is what I am doing to avoid the lag, but it hardly counts as a fix to not use a major mechanic of the game which I need all the time.

I didn't say it was a fix. You are having issues all the time. It helps to prevent that issue for the most part.

Right-click menu can help minimize the time needed to having P&P open. I agree though that at some point, optimizing several windows known to lag out the client should be addressed. P&P is one such offender.

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

People are giving you advice along the lines of "broken windshield doesn't prevent you from driving the car" because CCP won't fix it. This issue is not widely reported, so CCP will assume it's a problem with your computer, and will try to fix it from your computer's point of view.

Lag, in general, is treated as an end-user issue. CCP looks at the servers, the servers are running at blazing speed with no issue, thus any lag is the fault of the internet or of your computer. You won't be able to argue against this logic that they adopted.

Anyway, just wanted to point out, cause you seem to be getting angry at our suggestions.

PS. "CCP fix it!" on the forums does nothing. Either open a support ticket, or bug report it, if you want CCP to look at it.

I was getting huge lag when I came back. Graphics, everything to low. Looks like sh*t but no more lag.

Sorry if I came around as angry, it's probably just my usual snarly way of speaking. I do not have experience with CCPs approach to issues like those, as I am fairly new to the game, but i would have assumed and sitll assume CCP does indeed care :)

I am quite certain that this isn't an end-user issue as such. I don't know if Windows Users experience the same problem, but I'd be curious to know. Other than that I assume it to be a problem originating in legacy code that does a read of all bookmark locations thus causing overhead and finally lag.

Bookmarks have always been an issue in eve's history.

The problem arise when you have huge hyperlinks data to pop quickly.

>10k+ bookmarks per folders or something.
Same issue when loading wardec history of active alliance like "mirmidon collective" war history; 20K wars records can crash your pc lol.

Every 5 years they work on that but what more can you expect ?
developement budget to resolve issue Vs. Issue solved by simply not opening your folders ?

Edit: back in 2007 iirc they modified bookmark so we couldn't copy/paste them to friends because everybody had 150K bookmark folders which we shared among all friends, and server was utterly stressed to the borders of BSOD. That's why bookmarks are now items.

The reason everyone had thousands of bookmarks was because of "warp to zero" bookmarks being sold as "regional packs" in Yulai (used to be like Jita is now).

CCP changed it so you couldn't copy more than 5 (IIRC) at a time to prevent that, but eventually just allowed you to WTZ on a gate (used to drop you 15km away).

Sort your bookmarks into regional/gates/undocks/whatever folders and if you MUST have P&P open then only have the relevant folder open when jumping. Best just to use the right-click context menu although I appreciate that doesn't always work that well when you have dozens of bookmarks in one system.
