CCP's own research indicates that under the soon-to-be-phased-out trial account system, new players that lose a ship to other players are MORE likely to become paying subscribers that players that do not lose a ship to another player.

I've mentored several newbs whose first interaction with CODE. is to be a client of our ganking services. A few minutes later and they realise that they too can gank.

I often give them a couple million ISK and a gank Atron fit, tell them to go and shoot Ventures, and when they have made ten attempts, contact me again and I'll give them 50 million ISK. Really lets them see that they - a 700k SP newb with little knowledge of game mechanics - can actually influence the game world without having to level up to 100 first.

This is exactly what the research found, and there are very good reasons behind this apparently counter-intuitive paradox.

New players leave because they get bored, because they didn't get the chance to engage with the community, and/or they felt no emotional attachment to the game or the people who play it. Of course, there will also be a number of people who can’t afford or don’t want to pay the subscription.

Once any or all of those four issues is addressed (the first three of which are intertwined), the chances of a new player sticking around are increased significantly.

There's a huge difference between the immersive, engaging Eve experience offered by joining a group like CODE (or killing them) and the bleak tedium of sitting alone all day zapping rocks or shooting triangles. Getting blown up forces you to feel some kind of emotion (laughter, anger or fear), thereby forcing a reaction. One very common reaction is the basic human desire for revenge, and the other is the wish to learn how to do unto others what you yourself just experienced.

Affordability has now been taken care of with alpha clones, and this event therefore takes care of all four phenomena. Other types of events, such as last night’s Redemption Road newbro roam that I flew in, which attracted almost 100 people to fleet-up (many of whom were alphas), work to the same ends. Long may it continue.

That's a good initiative too, although it doesn't give the newbies the same sense of "you, by yourself, can impose yourself on the game world" that teaching them to gank does.

There's no doubt that they're very different experiences, but the results (new player retention and the elimination or reduction of bot aspirancy, risk aversion and attachment to ships) are very similar, albeit in different ways.

My favoured pastime gets new players into nullsec quickly, thereby getting them into the real spirit of Eve quickly, whereas suicide ganking encourages people to bring the real spirit of Eve to others via the thunder and poetry of The Code.

On the subject of players making a difference alone, a new FC can do that in nullsec, albeit through the f1 tapping of others; even 1 fleet can set off a chain reaction that has long-lasting and significant repercussions. I've seen it several times!

Anyway, back to the main topic, I'll watch this project with great interest!

Looking at this thread the party goes not too well..... What?

I guess at the end it might not be too fun to kill newbees in their useless ships for a while.... But we will see.

I hope you all had a wonderfull Christmas! Just a quick reminder that the CODE, Welcome to Ascension Event! is still going strong!

I haven't revealed all prizes yet, there is still some nice things under the hood. So keep on shooting stuff until downtime December 31, 2016!

Also, some people have mailed me a list of their kills, please don't. I will not count everything by myself.

Just mail me before January 10, 2017 downtime for which prizes you are eligible, with the total amount of kills and a link to your zkillboard. That makes my life a bit easier.

Lets finish 2016 with a big Bang!
