I thought about something: why not give the possibility to players to make costum designs that people could then apply on their ship while and/or after manufactured? Costum paint job designs would be an item that works kind of the same as blueprints. The one who made it keep the original (or sell it depending on its value) and can make copies of it to sell to people who wants to apply it on their ships. Basically, it would works like copyrights in real life.
