Multi Tier Chat Channel Permissions

Good Evening,

One of the things I love about Eve Online over other games is the fantastic dynamic chat system. However it is also one of the oldest features in the game with one of the oldest and most restrictive permission access systems in the game.

I would like to see a couple of changes:

  1. Channel MOTDs seem to break a lot, it would be nice if this could be solved.

  2. One of the issues is there seems to be a bunch of restrictions on MOTD length
    a) Number of visible characters (4000),
    b) Max number of lines
    c) Max number of code characters such as the code that makes URLs work and text colored. etc.

    It would be nice to see these restrictions made more clear as you can currently have 3000 characters left but get a message basically saying the MOTD is too long, in terms of either too many lines or two much formatting.

  3. A new permission system.
  4. With the new Access system (Access Lists) having multiple levels Owner, Admin, Manager, Member, Blocked. It would be awesome to be able to see some sort of permission system like this for channels either tied into Access lists (as citadels are) or some sort of similar setup in each chat channel. If you used access lists and channel profiles you could set up multiple channels, such as Logistics channels for a alliance/corp/community and could have one set of permissions tied to all channels.

    It would be awesome to have different permissions that could be assigned to specific access lists:
    * Can edit MOTD
    * Can kick from channel
    * Can mute person in channel
    * Can change channel settings (moderated, blocked, allowed, password etc)

    The idea being that under the old system to give anyone who does not own the channel the ability to touch the MOTD and remove people from the channel, they have to be an operator, this gives them the ability to remove all other operators and this is a problem.

  5. Finally I would love to see some kind of highlighting in channel for people of specific ranks with in the channel, maybe not a different text color like CCP/ISD have as to not confuse new pilots but some kind of emphasis that shows pilots they are important in the channel, this again would best be tied in to the access lists if at all possible.

Anyway, just a suggestion that will never get followed up on in a positive way :P

Such high hopes.

In relation to your suggestion, I think it should be taken even further.

Inline images in the MOTD, a recorded history that you can look at (eg. last 1000 lines of messages in the channel), CREST endpoints allowing both read and write access to channels from out of game, api capabilities allowing developers to add further functionality, etc.

CCP indicated a while back that they are thinking about additional social tools for the game; and I think the chat channel is one area that could really do with an update, to make it much more like the way slack and other modern chat services work.

I also think you can be much more positive than you think. This will come as CCP haven't dropped the idea of additional social tools. We just need to wait until it makes its way onto the roadmap so we can all add our input into the design process.

The entire player interaction system (chats, mailing lists, mails, calendar) needs a serious look. Checking mailing list participants for proper access rights is a pain, mail formatting is lackluster, we still cannot use CTRL + Backspace to delete entire words, or when I copy a chat message the copying does not preserve links, or I cannot highlight specific parts of the MOTD to only copy that instead of the entire MOTD go get some information, just to name a couple more things that need to be improved.

However, since such an improvement initiative would not be able to cause the same sparkly headlines other things like useless structures or skins do, it won't happen any time soon.

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.

Chat channels could do with a roundtable or some sort of discussion. One of the ideas that has come up before, is to have more than one row of chat channel tabs for those of us that like to have a lot of chat channels open. At the moment when you open successive chat channels they are added as tabs in a row, it would be nice to be able to have more than one row so that they could be kept in a smaller area of the screen.
