Currently we have Overview Presets to filter out items from the overview. These preset work very well until you have many items of the same type you need to search through.

My proposition is to add a Search Box at the top of the overview that will further filter out the results from the current overview's preset. I.E. You can have many rats/structures/players listed on the overview but as you start typing into the overview's search box, the overview will only show items with a name or type that includes the search box's text in it.

I know we can sort alphabetically and this does help. But in really large fleets/many objects on grid the items keep moving up and down the list making it jump all over the place. You can do the "keep your mouse moving on top of the overview window" trick but if you stop moving the mouse for a sec by accident the list will update itself and shift around again. A few small changes make a big difference at the bottom of the list.

Scenario 1:
- Fleet Commander: "Primary the Loki!"
- Player: [Can't find a Loki on his overview due to the huge fleet they are up against...]
- Player: [Types "Loki" into the overview's search box and selects the resulting ship type Loki]"

Scenario 2:
- Competing against another explorer in a high-sec complex you need to find that faction rat as soon as possible...

Scenario 3:
- Running missions and you need to kill a structure but the site has hundreds of walls and other structures you need to sift through...

Scenario 4:
- You need to hug your Logi in a fight (incursion mainly) but need to set up an overview just for Logi or sift through the whole fleet to find your Logi...

Features:
- Search field text box.
- Search button.
- Clear button.
- Color code the overview when it's being filtered to warn the player their overview is currently filtered by the search box.
- Live feedback: As the items in the grid change the filtered overview should change as well.
- Hide/Show: Options to hide or show the search box if possible. Some players might like a more compact look.

Issues:
- Some players might have "Loki" in their name showing them as a result when it was not intended. This is not a big deal though as there are much less items to pick from on the overview so now it's way easier to sort through them.
- The overview's title bar width might need to be extended to fit the search box and buttons.

Re-usability:
- This feature could be extended to chat windows, station guest windows, fleet member window to search for a player within that window as well as the Mail window or Wallet window to filter out by player/item.
- Maybe the Inventory filter box code can be used for this purpose speeding up the implementation time.

Danika, you usually have intelligent things to say. In this case, however, it appears that you read only 1/4 of the OP.

Broadcasts do nothing in this regard.
