I'm looking at the Griffin and the Bantam. Have any of you ever utilised the 5 m3 drone bay? What did you put in it? I feel like I'm missing a trick; I can't fathom why CCP would include this in their design What?

Yes.
Extra DPS is just one of the MANY things you can do with that 1 drone. I would suggest that you work on your overall view of eve and what you can do with things that seem useless at first glance. That and study what drones are available.

The Enyo used to have a 5m3 drone bay.

I threw a small ECM drone in there for giggles figuring, "whatever! If I get lucky, I get lucky."

Then, during a 3 on 1 Frigate fight,, that little drone jammed one of the people attacking me. It removed a good chunk of DPS from the field and allowed my tank to survive just long enough to blow up one of the other frigates attacking me.

Once the jam lifted I was 1/3 of the way through the second frigate and my armor was nearly repaired.

Yeeeeaaaah... that third frigate bugged out screaming words I can't post here. Blink

It depends a lot in the situation. In fleet fights, bantams and the like will use a combat drone to add dps (and get on kills). A single rep drone isn't very powerful, and managing it in a ship with little tolerance for error takes extra skill.

ECM drones for reasons already stated in this thread are a good gamble choice. A few of these across tackle frigates or griffin support can work as an extra ship jammed.

For solo work, it really depends on what the ship is lacking. Damage and ECM drones are obvious options, but I've used a light web drone to good effect in the incursus for a little extra range control.

If you really don't have a need filled by the drone, and can spare it while still being combat capable, a salvage drone can be nice to clean up after a fight. A lot of my cruisers with 30m drone bays end up with a flight of light drones and a single salvage drone.

A volume .5 drone bay beckons to be filled with utility :) This being said I have found the inclusion of even one combat drone the equivalent of a well aimed turret at most ranges in most beginner scenarios so it's always a safe bet to use them!

I've been taken aback by the inclusion of Drone bays in ships which I would of never thought! For example - the standard Caracal has a 10m3 sized bay for Drone storage which is just enough for 2 Hornet I's, yet interestingly the Navy Issue Caracal doesen't have one at all!
