The character in the killmail has been playing the game for 4 years and probably understands the risk they were taking. It wouldn't take more than a few successful exploration runs to pay for that ship.

The important thing in Eve is don't fly what you can't afford to lose. If you have a few spare dollars in real life, there is nothing wrong with buying a PLEX and using the proceeds to fit a shiny ship as long as you realize it's more attractive to gankers and just as easy to blow up.
