I was about to say that I remembered it used to have something like this back in 2003. The irony was the gameplay documentation was so bad virtually nobody knew about it :)

I (for example) only really developed my mechanics skill by swapping cargo expanders for overdrives at either end of a plutonium run and didn't realize what was going on till much later.

But its a bit of a crappy idea. Once you know how to trigger xp reward its always exploitable. Look at how many cheesy things people are doing in Skyrim to level their abilities.

Even if implemented in a restricted form it would be seen as pretty much mandatory to log in and actively train your character each day.

What makes you say it would be mandatory?

You know: exactly the same arguments were given some time to remove learning skills.

People said: you MUST train all learning skills to 5 before you even START TO PLAY this game. Elsewere you are loose SP collecting race.

Was is stupid? I sure it was. Because me personally have never had any learning skill at 5 and i still play this game after 2 years. And have enough SP to play how i like.

Were people listening to those cries? They were. And today we don't have learning skills.

The same thing was said about mission types and agents. Result: system was "simplified".

People always choose to bot or grind. And this idea will make new bots and grinders for sure.

-1 for it.

Gaining extra skill points through usage was indeed implemented in the very early days of EVE. My Afterburner skill shot through the roof, I remember.

Funny how people propose a system that has already been tried and dismissed. Maybe we should get some suggestion on super highways going again.

The classic was the Afterburner skill. I'm pretty certain that nobody in 2003 actually used the (current) training system to get that past L2.

Amusingly I told you about the system way back in Phoenix Alliance days (my alt was a RKK director then, rented their first Venal office). I remember your plutonium runs well :)

Heh yeah, those were the wild west days of eve online really, no warp to zero, no warp core stabs, 130m isk (all your worldly assets) in the cargo bay of a bestower hoping to make 20m isk a round trip through 20 systems of 0.0 :)

Well that's a very well thought out and persuasive post you've got there. I know it convinced me!

It doesn't need to convince you, the current method has 8 and a half years of working behind it, last thing eve needs is a grinding system resulting in a WoW in space clone. Go back to WoW?

200th time I've seen this said.

200th time I've said "I'd just afk all day in a Apoc shooting a roid to level Large Pulse Spec to 5 for the shiggles"

I lied :o

The system we have in EVE is so bad that Sony is stealing it for PlanteSide 2 ... shocking I know.

Once upon a time I thought that a skill degradation mechanic for the skills you haven't used in a while would make things a little more interesting, but had to concede that even that would get abused through macroing and botting. I'm yet to see an experience based system that hasn't been abused.

Nex (Cash Shop) / Aurum - removing sand from the sandbox since Incarna. Currently the only use for aurum is to buy virtual items in the in-game store, but Cockerill expects to expand its uses in the future.

Its pretty bad in most other games that had that system. Most notably in Oblivion, where the best way to level most skills involving some mechanism to hold the relevant action button down and going afk for hours. Or in LOTRO, where I used to just spam my skills every time they came off cooldown in order to earn the relevant deed faster. Its definitely not fun, and its not even especially realistic. Repetition of mundane tasks only gets you so far, and besides we're all supposed to be learning via Matrix style skill injection anyway.

Nothing major but I was thinking it'd be really cool if when you were training a specific skill, you could get a little bit of extra SP each time you used whatever that skill was for. So like if you were training Drones and you used your drones to perform a task you'd get a little sp for it, but ONLY if that was the skill that was actively training.

Obviously it wouldn't be much but it'd be something to give the people that actually do play the game a little edge over those people that just log in, queue skills, and log off and it might even give those people a reason to actually play vs afking. Of course the current mechanics wouldn't change at all, just something to add on top of it.

Is this a cool idea or am I just dumb?

There would be even more bots out there if this was how it worked. I think it works fine the way it is personally.

Sure it does. I don't know a single new player that can make 3M per day without help. Nor do I know of any brand players that are blind enough to think that they should be able to fly every ship on day 1.

When I was new, I decided that one day I would fly a Machariel. It took me about a year, but eventually I bought one. Goals are what gets people to stay, not what drives them off.
