Protect What You Love

A baby was born. The baby grew into a man, strong and brave. The man became a capsuleer, an immortal. He fought fiercely in many battles, piloted countless craft across the ages. Each time his pod was destroyed by war, his consciousness respawned in a fresh clone. Time after time, a seemingly never ending cycle.

However, the infinite loop was just an illusion. By now, the Empires were already a distant memory and eventually the societies and cultures that still supported the cloning and ship technology began breaking down. Exacerbated by new threats emerging from unknown areas of space, a darkness began to shroud New Eden.

The capsuleer fought on, it was afterall, all he knew. Another day in his long life, a huge battle against the darkness. Suddenly, in a flash of overwhelming light and energy, his pod was destroyed. It would not be replaced this time. His consciousness was not captured by technology as before, it was instead offered back to the waiting universe which met him with a warm and welcoming embrace. His soul, the last of its kind out of trillions of capsuleers, was the last to return from where once it had come, all those thousands of years before. There would be no more. The time of the capsuleer was over.

Somewhere in a small office an Icelandic man with a sigh and a tear in his eye punched a short command into a terminal; hundreds of miles away, a bank of servers in a datacenter began shutting down for the last time.
