This may have been drowned out slightly in Amarr last night, so in accordance with tradition and for the record here it is again:

I, Rodj Blake, swear fealty to the Empire and its legally annointed Empress, Catiz I.

I, Alizebeth Amalath, swear fealty to the Empire and its divinely anointed Empress, Her Majesty Catiz I.

I would hate to do this in public, but to the admiral and all who simply copied his phrasing, anointed is spelled with one 'n.' Apparently this is a typo going back years.

I, Arrendis Culome, can appreciate you wanting these sentiments to be public examples to others, but shouldn't you go offering your fealty to the Empress through Imperial channels, not GalNet message boards?

I mean, it's kine of like saying 'I like pie' (not PIE)—it's a wonderful sentiment, but it carries as much weight as the single unit of trit Pend sticks into their disposable 'you blew up' frigates.

A public statement of this kind is all the more important because it's visible to everyone, Ms. Arrendis. It's a little like the Imperial loyalists' showing at the coronation speech yesterday: their personal loyalty can be presumed; the loyalty of those who couldn't be present isn't in question; but the public show of support is dedication demonstrated.

There's a little difference between a private, quietly held belief or loyalty, and one that you're willing to shout across the public comm channels for everyone to hear-- and, possibly, refer back to and even quote.

Also, this is a bit more than a sentiment. "I like pie" isn't usually worth saying much; most people like pie. This is an oath, though. "I shall always and forever like pie and never eat any other baked good" is a much stronger statement.

This event-- the rise of a new Empress-- is profoundly meaningful to them, and they're letting the whole cluster bear witness to their oaths.

That's a little more than saying "I like pie."

Perhaps, but there's also a certain level of implicit 'and anyone who isn't willing to do so is scum' in such a display. Again, perfectly appropriate within Imperial channels, but less so here. If anything, public declarations of faith and fealty tend to be used to mask internal doubts and devotion. The louder the person shouts their convictions, the more likely it is that the person they need to try to convince is themselves.

That's probably more true in less-formal circumstances. That is-- if people who have sworn here keep swearing and swearing and swearing (and/or talking about how they've sworn) elsewhere, I might agree with you.

I, also, swore an oath a few months ago. As time goes on and I settle more comfortably into the role, I find myself talking about it less.

But to get there, I had to take the oath in the first place. For me, that was private, mostly, but this?

This is a part of an extremely public event.
