Hi all,
Pod & Planet EVE fiction contest is open and will run for a month. It's in its fifth year, and people have submitted some truly amazing stuff over the years. And a lot of them submitted with the preface, "This is my first time trying something like this, I've never written any fiction before."

The prizes pool this year is at about 54 bil isk or so, but that's just filthy lucre. Prizes, no prizes, the fun of the event is everybody writing, having their stories read by many people, seeing how they fared with the judges, and hopefully being inspired to write more. Here's the contest site, with information.

Any questions or comments, please mail or say on the website's Discussion page. o7

Edit for Prize Update:

Prize pool currently totals a drop over 54 bil ISK. Prizes will be a mixture of ships, nice item loot,
and raw ISK. The detailed mix for each category will be shake out as we go along.
(Note - the sanguinary theme emerged on its own as our various sponsors donated items.)
Amounts are rounded down so you may receive bonus blood infusion at the end. Check back often,
all the way until judging is complete and winners are announced. Kind and cheerful people tend to
donate additional loot as the contest progresses.

Grand Prize
Plex, 3 Bhaalgorn, Skill Injector & Liquid ISK = 7.5 bil
This prize usually goes to the best story in the 8,000 Suns canon-faithful category, but if a story from
either of the other categories gets a score that really outstrips the best in 8,000 Suns, it could steal it.

8,000 Suns in New Eden
1st Prize - 2 Bhaalgorn, Skill Injector, Dark Blood Medium Energy Nosferatu & Liquid ISK = 5.9 bil
2nd Prize (there will be two of these) - Ashimmu, Dark Blood Medium Energy Nosferatu & Liquid ISK = 3.7 bil
3rd Prize (there will be three of these) - Ashimmu, Dark Blood Medium Energy Nosferatu & Liquid ISK = 2.1 bil

Other Things Just Make You Swear and Curse
1st Prize - 2 Bhaalgorn, Skill Injector, Dark Blood Medium Energy Nosferatu & Liquid ISK = 2.7 bil

Honorable Mention
(there will be eight of these) - Cruor & Liquid ISK = 540 mil
Across category prize chosen from top-scoring entries

Best Entry by a New Writer
'Nightstalker' Goggles, Cruor, Dark Blood Medium Energy Nosferatu & Liquid ISK = 1.08 bil
Across category prize awarded to the top scoring entry by an author who has never won a prize in a Pod and Planet contest

Submitting my first entry ever into any writing contest, and by far the longest piece of creative writing I have ever written.

Submitting for the "A Day in the Life" category.

URL: http://evewritingkatsumotomoliko.blogspot.com/

Fun Fact: I wrote this today in six hours.

I am kind of nervous about creative writing, but I am confident that my work will do reasonably well.

Katsumoto,

If you haven't already, be sure to notify Telegram Sam:

How to Submit Your Work
1) Post your story somewhere on the internet where it can be accessed by the judges and readers. Examples: The EVE Fiction forum, pastebin, Medium, or any free blog host such as Wordpress or Blogger. The URL will be shared with the public, so don’t post in a password-protected place.

2) Send Telegram Sam an EVEmail with:
-The author's name
-The story's title
-Which category the story should be entered in
-The story's word count
-Your confirmation that it's your story and hasn't been posted/published before
-The URL link to where the story is posted.

-Optional: Let everybody know about your story over in the contest's EVE forum Out of Game Events and Gatherings thread and/or on this site's Discussion page.
-Optional: Give your fellow writers some feedback. They appreciate feedback as much as you do. :D

As stories come in, we'll be posting the links to them on the Contest Entries page. Check back often to see what the writers of EVEdom are producing.

Writers can ship my an eve-mail for reviews :D I have most of the ones of the 8,000 suns category done. In the meantime, he's some general writing advice for next year!

•The most important rule to remember when writing, especially when pertaining to a particular character, is this question: Is this the most interesting thing to happen to your character, and if not, why aren’t we reading about that?

•Exposition is a powerful tool, but be wary of how it is used. A general saying goes along with exposition: “Don’t TELL us what happened, SHOW us what happened”. Be especially cautious not to let your exposition be more interesting than the story you’re telling!

•Be careful of simple sentence starts! An experienced writer will often work to give each sentence a particular flare, catching the eye of the reader. Read these two sentences, and ask yourself which sounds better:
- “He walked over to the computer console and typed on the keys. He spelled out the words with deft precision.”
- “Walking over to the computer console, he began to type on the keys. With deft precision, he spelled out the words.”

•Remember that dialogue is an important and powerful tool that can be used to your advantage. The way your character behaves while he speaks is a great indicator of who he is as a person. Consider many of the works by Quintin Tarantino, in which many of his movies have extensive dialogue scenes. His characters are often performing other actions, such as making coffee, or cleaning up blood. Try these examples:
- “ISK is the sole source of power,” he said, in smooth baritone, with a sharp, wolfish grin as he crossed his arms over his chest.
- “Well, I can't really afford a new one,” she said, placing the chemical soaked rag against the dilapidated, blood-spattered cushion of the sofa.

•Don’t be afraid to start with the middle or the end of your story! The introduction to the story is the hardest part, and a lot of writers forego writing it until they've established what they want to happen. Feel free to flesh out your story from its most interesting aspects, and then fill in the blanks later on.

That's really nice that you're sharing reviews, Nomistrav. And the writing advice as well. I especially like the suggestion about feeling free to start in the middle and deal with the beginning later.

Judging Update, Nov. 24 - Well, we didn't meet our hoped-for date of Nov. 23. Three judges are done, three others need some more time. I'll see if I can get estimates from them. Thank you for favoring us with your patience.
