Also, if you didn't really want to invite trolling to this thread then you probably should of worded it differently. The image of throwing blood into the water comes to mind. :P

Yes I mean hardley an OMG moment.

Collision detection sucks is what your saying.

And while a appreciate it could be done better it's not as simple as it sounds.

It's all about cubes see. To keep things simple the area of the colliladable object, needs to be defined, it is not the same 'entity' as the mesh you see as the visual representation.

Now collision detection requires you check every mob/player against a list of collidables in the area. So 5 mobs , 100 colidables is 500 checks everytime you move.

So whats this to do with cubes. Well for ease of use each one of these 'collidable' entities that are checked are cubes.

Therefore to make objects 'collidable' side more conform with it's visual aspect you need to use more and varying sizes of cubes.

Say it took 100 cubes to acuratly represent the an entity, then our earlier calculation of 5*100, becomes 5*100*100= 50,000 a lot more for your CPU/memory to do.

In a way collision has a resolution like graphics, what your are asking for is an increase in this 'collison resolution', this would depend on how much systems overheads the EVE client has to work with.

TLDR

Yes can be done... not as easy as it sounds

I think this would illustrate the OP's problem.

The rat isn't touching anything, the collisions on the asteroids around it are horribly off.

But you might also notice that you really don't see this bad of a inaccuracy with smaller roids. What i think is that CCP has a scaling issue or something.

OMFG I actually recognise someone from in game. Hi Xercodo

That is definitely the issue however in that video you can see the object clearly and its obvious that there is a danger of being trapped. My ship was a LONG way from any visible I do understand all the graphical and communication requirements.

So anyway yes I am over it now and just wont be going to any belts in the hurrmmm ever.

So collidable objects may have sounded cool and I have used them defensively when mining lowsec but what do they really add to the game?
