We really really need to get to the bottom of this. Knowing how wrecking shots work outside of 2X falloff is a key decision point for several of the doctrines I'm working on. This is a key issue as far as I'm concerned.

Agreed.

I was under the impression that at 2x falloff your damage approaches 0 dps and wrecking shots would only occur within falloff until someone said, you get wrecking even in optimal range.

How exactly that works remains a mystery but in 5 years of flying turret boats, I have an idea how to fly them to hurt someones feelings while not hurting too much doing that.

But even so often (usually very rarely) I hit something outside of falloff range but I just switch to longer range ammo by then anyways.

Overpowered:

Beam lasers aren't low rof guns but high alpha guns like artilleries but with a little better tracking and a little lower damage than artilleries.

That's the gist of long range vs short range guns in EVE.

Eve Minions is recruiting.

This is the law of ship progression!

Yup, I'll confirm: chance to hit still plays into whether you get wrecking hits. The chance isn't fixed at 1%.

Methodology: take this Rifter on Sisi:

[Rifter, test bed]
Gyrostabilizer II
Gyrostabilizer II
Gyrostabilizer II

Sensor Booster II, Targeting Range Script
[empty med slot]
[empty med slot]

125mm Gatling AutoCannon II, EMP S
125mm Gatling AutoCannon II, EMP S
125mm Gatling AutoCannon II, EMP S
[empty high slot]

Small Projectile Ambit Extension II
Small Projectile Ambit Extension II
Small Projectile Ambit Extension I

My skills give optimal of 600 and falloff of 12329 (near enough). Quick calculations give:

0.009938824072 CTH at 32400m
0.004979262023 CTH at 34700m

So, start off approaching a customs office using keep at range set to 32400. Fire two clips (200 shots times 3 guns times 2 clips = 1200 total shots fired). 13 hits, all wrecking (as predicted) for 0.01083333333 CTH. Near enough the predicted value.

Next, set keep at range to 34700, rip off another two clips. 6 total hits, CTH .005 -- also near enough predicted.

So there you have it. There is no fixed 1% chance to get wrecking shots. CTH still factors in, so outside of about optimal + 2.75x falloff you're down to 0.53% CTH and by optimal + 3x falloff you're down to 0.2% CTH.

And now we know.
