Well...after even more consideration, I've decided to at least play out the free trial. I spent most of my day at work off handedly thinking of Eve. I rather enjoyed the few hours I played last nite, and I see a lot of potential here, as well as an interesting, and defnitiely diverse community. Neither the game itself nor anyone involved with it has managed to aggravate me yet, so I really should be fair. I'm gathering from what I've read, in this thread and elsewhere, that Eve doesn't really resemble the dread lord days of UO...no game that has been going this long possibly could...and that was really my main worry.

Lol...UO PTSD. I think that actually is a lot of it. Those days turned me off pretty hard from pvp, especially the unrestricted sort. That said...I also didn't like UO's answer, which was a world of no pvp at all ever anywhere for anyone. I've enjoyed the pvp scenes in other MMO's, so maybe I will here too. If not, it sounds avoidable enough, and I'm fascinated with the complexity of it all. I mean...sure it will involve a lot of reading and learning things, or a ridiculous amount of trial and error...but simple games are only fun for so long.

...and I'm actually coming fresh out of playing the X series of games =) They were a lot of fun, if a bit easy after a while. That's actually part of what brought me here in the first place.

Either way, I'm sure nobody is really particularly concerned or interested in what I decide to do, so I'll stop typing.

Anyhow, thanks a lot to everyone for their input!

There are two types of players that try to play and/or play eve. There are those in which something happens that they dont like, such as getting killed by a player in high sec, and then complain and whine about it and want CCP to make major changes to the game so they can do what they want.

Then their are the players that find themselves in a situation they dont like, again this is usually pvp when they didnt want to, and they instead learn from that situation and how to avoid it while still doing what they want to do.

If you are the first type you will not survive or enjoy eve. If you are the second type you will do fine here. Every time you are killed in eve, be it by an NPC or a player, it should be a learning experience. If you learn from your deaths you will find avoiding death is much easier than most people make it out to be.

Also there is an in game rookie help chat channel. It should be a tab on your chat window. All newbies get it for 30 days( though you can manually add it back to your channels). It is a good place to ask questions if you want an immediate answer. And its not bad to read if you are doing something that doesnt require your full attention like mining or traveling multiple jumps. You will likely pick up some random useful information. It is moderated and naughty people are usually quickly banned from it.

The rookie help channel is the only one that really is moderated and people arent allowed to try to scam you in. Also gankers arent allowed to kill rookies in starter systems. Though less than 1% of new players get killed by gankers in their first 15 days or something like that.

EVE isn't too far off of other MMO's. If you look at the big one, WoW, you'll notice that even on a PVE server (something that doesn't exist in EVE) if you wander into the wrong area or zone you are going to be in for NPC vs. You or Player vs. You even if you didn't declare yourself PvP flagged.

EVE isn't too far off but you have to recognize that even in High Security Space, you aren't 100% safe. The idea is that conflict generates content. All of EVE is PvP and you aren't forced to cooperate with other players, unlike other MMO's where the rules prevent you from engaging certain targets no matter how much you want to. So that Horde player across the zone line making rude gestures at you can't even be attacked by you. In EVE, another player talking smack in local about you can be dealt with, even in HiSec. Sure, they can mock you while docked up in a station, but they are the ones that look like fools to do something like that. If they leave, they are yours to smack around if you have the desire and skills.

So, to really determine if you like playing EVE, hang out in HiSec, learn the game and then start broadening your horizons. You might find an eventual home in Providence among the many corps (like mine, see under my avatar) that are "Not Red, Don't Shoot" (NRDS) and pretty much leave most folks alone as long as they respect the sovereignty of the Providence territory.

Bury or not, I don'treally care. I deleted that one, I wasn't happy with how she looked. I just kinda hit random on all the choices and went with it. Since I decided to stay a while longer, I felt like I should at least make one I'm satisfied with the looks of.

But yea, I don't really care what happens with the post lol, can I delete the whole thread?

Interesting choice.

The horrible smile looks like she had a stroke, though. Big smile

Yea, I was going for a smirk, but ended up looking like a stroke, or bell's palsy or something. I don't really feel like starting over again, so I guess I'm stuck with old stroke-face here. Or maybe there's a way to fix it that doesn't cost an arm or a leg...in which case I guess I coulda stuck with my first one.

Either way...I've pretty well made up my mind that I will be playing eve for many months to come. I'm ending up staying up way later than I'd like playing, and itching to get home to it...a feeling I haven't had for any game in many years. Even getting killed wasn't the drag I was afraid of. I was out exploring aimlessly, I knew it was gonna happen eventually. I kinda regret not trying eve sooner...and being such an indecisive derp about it.

Not sure about a trial account, but with a regular account one can change a character's looks quite often for free. (shirt icon in a station's services or the mirror in captain's quarters)

You can only change stuff that can be easily changed without plastic surgery in "real life" ie. hair, clothes, makeup etc.

With a plex you can buy a resculpt to modify the rest (facial structure, body type, etc.)

I was attracted to Eve because of the economic simulation and play as an industrialist, currently with operations in highsec and nullsec. I lose a few ships a year - mostly in nullsec and mostly because I get complacent and do something foolish. Thus far my average annual losses are significantly less than my average monthly income - I look at it as a cost of doing business.
What kind of a cruel, dystopian world is this where violent deaths are casually written off as an entry in an expense account?

After some consideration, I decided to give EVE a try. I'm going thru the tutorial, and kinda enjoying it so far. However, hanging in the back of my head is the fact that it is free for all pvp. I played UO back in its free pvp days...it was horrible...prolly gives away a bit of my age lol... I remember having to get a group together to do basically anything ever that was outside of town. I remember still getting ganked, constantly, and the dry looting, and the trash talk, and the corpse camping. Anyone who was around for those days knows what I'm talking about. As a result, it kinda burned me on pvp in mmo's. I work a lot, and have a pretty limited amount of time I can invest in recreation. I'm not going to waste time I could spend on something else more pleasant. Not that I completely hate online pvp...I hate the griefing that usually...in my experiences always...accompanies it.

So, question is, should I even bother with this? Can I look forward to similar experiences here? What does a person stand to lose in pvp? How prominent of a role is it going to play? Can I look forward to getting wtfpwned over and over and over, and losing like...all my stuff every time all the time? Or is there some cap on what you can lose on death? Do players have some degree of restraint and not immediately jack lowbies followed by the inevitable teabagging or equivalent? Thanks.

My suggestion is get the heck out og High sec as soon as you can. Find a Corp that seems like a fit and run.
