It doesn't need a diverse audience, this isn't a food court at your mall, it's a fine game with a very specific set of attractions:

Market-oriented players
Free-range gankers
Joyously space-attracted sociopaths
MMO loners
People with friends that still have the client installed.



Devs just need to keep the loyalists satsfied. Those, like me, that return after a 3-4 year absence with an itch to see what's going on should expect to be annihilated and then roll a new alt to learn the game changes, I suppose.
