A Lvl 4 gas cloud mining mission. I see no visual indication that my gas cloud miner is operational other than the ore shows up in my cargo hold after each cycle. Is there supposed to be an animation associated with the operation of a gas cloud miner?

Wha?!? I Pay For Animation! I feel Cheated! Bah Humbug! How hard can it be to show gas condensing?

Not so. There is a hyperboloid cone shaped vacuum effect. It's been a while but I think it happenes near the end of each cycle of your harvesters. Of course you need your graphics setting set to show such things ... but once your running hi-res do look very closely. It's subtle, but it's there.

p.s. I just wanted to say "hyperboloid cone". Dunno if that's the right phrase for a curve sides cone, a bit like a tornado ... but I liked the phrase anways.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

From memory it's there persistently. The effect is only a few times larger than the gas harvester turrets themselves though, so unless you're zoomed in a fair way you won't actually see it.

Possibly another thing to add to the graphics paper cuts thread.

OMFG!?! So I have to zoom into to see the rivets on my battleship AND turn off the invulnerability field before I see the TINY graphic!?!? Very disappointing! The graphic IS there, just insignificant. It needs to be at least 4 times as large to be seen at all. EVE FAIL.

Surely you can't be serious.

I mean, you're sucking up gas which generally isn't very visible last time I checked. Unless it is excited by energy. Hm... Well, maybe CCP could do a bit more to make things more visually appealing to that end. I'd rather see them buff player beards.

The mission takes me to a spot with a floating rat dispenser and a glowing gas cloud. Even if the 'energized' gas doesn't display a graphic, then the gas miner in operation itself should be visible. When I zoom out to 5K I can still see my strip miners in action, and that effect is NOT the ore - the mining beam itself is giving off an effect. See my point?

Edit:
I think that the graphic is important. When engaged in other activities, other ships nearby can visually identify the activity of my ship - and vica-versa. When I enter an asteroid field I can see who is mining and who is not - so I know who to 'look' at and who I can safely ignore. I am in a battleship, and I do not wish to spook my fellow miners, so it would be a good idea for them to visually identify me as a miner as soon as they enter wherever I am. All other mining activities are visually identifiable, and this should be no exception.

Uh... you warp in on someone sitting in a gas cloud, what do you think they're gonna be doing?

Gas mining, with very few exceptions*, is not a highsec activity. If some unknown is warping in on you while you're sucking gas in e.g. lowsec, spooking *them* should be the last thing on your mind.

*if you are gas harvesting in highsec... I'm sorry on a few levels.

EDIT: I read the first post again and saw that you're doing a gas mining mission, apparently. Ok, fair enough, but the same rules apply. If a random stranger warps in on your mission they're generally up to no good. Prooobably not going to be a fellow miner (really??).

I see it as an inconsistency in game play, this is an exception to the rule. It should be corrected, and the easiest way is to replace the gas cloud miner graphic with that used by the ice miner. A simple fix for an overlooked glitch.

I think CCP realllly has more important things to worry about.

LOL. I'm not sure what 'rule' you're talking about. It's not inconsistent at all .... ore and ice are harvested by laser-like thingies while gas, which is a very tenuous stuff at the best of times, gets hoovered into your hold. Certainly not a glitch and, IMHO, absolutely no need to 'fix' this thing that ain't broken.

So i reckon a more subtle graphics entirely appropriate, although others are welcome to want pick and green flashing neon gas harvesters if that's their particular PvE turnon.

Hyperboloid of one sheet.

Added: there's a hyperboloid of two sheets. The two look alike (that is, both look like twin cones) once you get far away from the funky stuff in the middle.

I don't see anything wrong...I mine gas all the time and honestly, an ice mining animation isn't really going to do much especially since you have to almost kiss the gas to mine it anyways...

Gas mining isn't for you if you're going to complain that you don't have an animation.

How may I drug you with drugs?

Ok, for those who care about such things ...

I am harvesting gas atm, in J123456, and the graphics have changed from what i remembered and mentioned above. Now each (T2) harvester has its own little vacuum cone of glowing gas being sucked to it, throughout the cycle. The tips of the harvesters glow plasma blue when active, and there are associated sound effects.

How can **anyone** be dissatisfied with this??

It's almost as cool and exciting as mining ice!

The Gas Injections mission was as exciting as I remember it being. You do have to remember how to jetcan mine, which can be difficult for the Eve forum warrior to master.
