Question around Exploration

Greetings all,

I am a new player on EVE and subbed off around April after 2months of play. It is difficult i must admit but I kept thinking about the game and now decided to resub. I have been reading and watching tutorials around exploring (I love the space feel and a sense of going into the unknown).

However, I have a question, can I explore, scan etc with a Battleship (obviously with the right training and equipments) ? or is the other ships more better suited for this?

Kind regards

You're not exploring in a vacuum, you're exploring in a PVP environment. Explorers typically need mobility (you move from site to site after all), and a battleship is too slow and cumbersome to function well in that role. As a matter of fact, currently battleships are so slow that everybody mostly flies cruisers and frigates.

Which is why there are plenty of frigates and cruisers designed for exploration, or with sufficient bonuses for probing to do it well. And some of the advanced T2 or T3 cruisers can approach battleship-level performance, while keeping a cruiser's mobility.

Thank you for the reply. Iam currently looking at Stratios which looks good

I would ask you, what all do you plan to do in the ship? That really determines the answer to this. If you are in high sec and you plan to do the combat sites and relic/data sites, then something like a stratios would work. If all you want to do is data/relic then I would get a T2 covert ops ship.

Some things like limited sleeper caches won't allow cruiser sized ships in. Since this is some of the best loot you are going to see in high sec, as sites go, the covert ops would be required to even access these.

EVE University has some great articles on exploration that I like. There are a few YouTube videos out on the subject as well.

Right now I'm cruising around in a Heron until I get the skills I need to operate a covert ops cloak to outfit in my Astero. The T1 frigates are great (and cheap) to fly around in because of speed and maneuverability. If you lose one it's no big deal, you can get a new one outfitted for about 1.5 mil on the high side. Or just fly back to hi sec and do the tutorials in a new area to get one outfitted for free. Speed and stealth will help you out in exploration.

Happy flying!

I see you like exploration, glad to hear that, i consider that most interesting non pvp activity in eve. Im very expirienced explorer did everything with exploration in it in every part of space

I see you say you want to get stratios. My advice is-dont. Dont fly stratios until you know what you are doing very well you will only end up with big loss mail. use astero for pvp and exploration in wh space or use cov op or astero for exploration in null space, as explorer stay out of high unless you are going to do combat sites, since in high and low relic and data sites are of very low value.

As for stratios trust me you will know when you are ready to fly it I guarantee you you are not ready right now since you are posting this on forum. Also strat is not exploring ship as much as it is pvp for pure exploration you use cov op and for exploration and killing other explorers you use astero. Contact me in game, send me mail or something if you need advice from someone.

Starting with exploration : forget the shiny expensive ships. Buy a cheap T1 frigate with the bonuses for exploration, check some ways to fit it either in the forums or on youtube or whatever wiki or blog you find, and go get massacred by your little comrads playing in the same sandbox. Rince and repeat until you start to understand how to fly safer.
Joining a corp active in your time zone would also help you to learn faster and to have more fun.
Also, i'm not going to write an advertising for EVE University in each post i write, but... Blink

Heck, you should. Y'all's wiki is awesome and has helped me out a lot for my return to New Eden. Keep up the good work over there! I would've joined your Corp/Alliance but I never heard back from your recruiter and then TEST got to me. :)

I'm pretty new myself but i think i can offer a useful alternative to the standard astero or cov ops frig answer.

Interceptors.
fast as hell, cool lookin and able to moon walk right through gate camps after insulting the campers.
My homie Johnny Splunk of EVE scout hooked me up with this idea, he runs a great twitch channel that teaches you very well how to explore. https://www.twitch.tv/evescout/profile
Do yerself a favor and watch some of his vod or catch his shows.
Anyways the ceptor took me a bit to train but i explored with this before my t2 fit stuff was available. Scanning takes a bit longer at first and i felt like i needed these implants to make it work at first.

Poteque 'Prospector' Environmental Analysis EY-1005

It is a bt of an investment but i feel it was worth it as if you stay alert its pretty hard to die while explorin in this thing.
So now im pretty trained up and i got a 99.0 scan strength.
My fit only gets relics. I don't do data sites anymore cause i don't hate myself.

I've been having a great deal of success doing high-sec exploration in a destroyer of all things. I've been using the Algos (5 guns + Launcher w/ 5x light drones) which has helped me clear pretty much every site I encounter (except for 4/10s like Phi-Outpost that creep up). Just have to refit for data/arch sites.

I know, right? I think I'm going to try this just for the hell of it. I've been seeing a lot more campers out in my area that I like to explore.
