The Voluval is the sacred coming-of-age ceremony for the Minmatar.

If you want to do something that is "unique" to each race to make them all a little different, the Voluval is definately a winner for the Matari.

  • I think many Vherokior players want to change their bloodline, I've seen similar opinions.

If you look at what old Vherokior characters looked like and at the current ones, they are very different. Old ones did not even look asian to me...

I think you should just add an account service to do that, maybe only once per character and only for those characters that were created before the new character editor.

  • Ever since I woke up in a hotel room after a eve meet with the words amarr victor writting in byro all across my arm I aimed to have my char take a similar tatoo on his arm. Custom lettering that follows the contours of your body? Since you where able to do it for zombieboy, make it so...

PS: The zombieboy tatoo would be an excellent pirate/blood raiders item.

  • really fat people are hard to create. I understand the limits regarding char interaction later, but still. More variation in actual body size/build would be nice and immersive. Although the lack of different sizes at least an be explained my standard cloning processes. Fatness is a must though.

  • Are there any small usability issues that bothering you in the character creator?

  • Sometimes it starts loading a piece of clothing that I did not want to load just because while scrolling between all the options I accentually click to hard. Perhaps a different way of scrolling between options that include more then 3 options, especially for the larger selections.

    CCP karkur wrote:
  • Do you think players in general would be in favor of allowing bloodline changes, or are there just a few souls that are unhappy with their heritage?

  • I personally wouldn't like bloodline changes, on the other hand its technically feasible in the lore of EVE to become whatever you want through clones. So I guess any opposition should be cultural. But names and faces often belong together so I wouldn't like to see it since it would be (almost) the same as changing a name.

    CCP karkur wrote:
  • Any more suggestions? (other than "hey, we want more racial clothing" and "hey, we want no clothing restrictions").

  • Not only racial clothing or resctriction but racial difference between bloodlines, the Amarr seem to be the only ones that have pulled it of (some Minmatar, meh). Kata Amentis voluval idea is an excellent example.

I'd also like to see the medal system instituted into the portrait. If you have medals you should get to display them on your char if you want. Some military blouses even seem to have left room for it. FW medals for instance should be incorperated into the cloth of a player that is in FW

Lettering on your shirts like real military blouses (name/rank) have and corp/alliance logo's on clothing same for tattoos. And more insignias.

(I've been looking at the character creator for so long that it makes perfect sense to meP, but it would be great to get some input from you guys... and these are just questions, not promises that everything you suggest will be doneLol)

    1) When sculpting body or facial features, it is often hard to tell exactly what parts of the body are being affected. In addition, there is no way to make minor changes. When clicking and dragging an area, about the only real changes you can make are major. It can be difficult to get the exact look you want because there is no way to make fine adjustments. Giving some indication of what you are doing compared to the "original" state would be very helpful. (I spent around an hour each trying to get just the right look that I wanted for each of my 6 avatars.) Also, why can't I create a taller/shorter than average, or obviously fat/thin avatar?

    2) Found the tucking options quite easily, as well as the randomize ability (even though I never use this option). Tucking/untucking pants into boots is fine, tucking/untucking shirt hem into pants is fine as well. It would be nice to see some additional tucking options (or additional clothing), e.g. more short- to mid-length sleeve shirts, or the ability to roll sleeves up.

    3) Body tattoos would be a cool addition, but wouldn't be seen, due to the restrictions on the current character portaits. Arm/shoulder tattoos, however, would be visible, and are more common and likely than face tattoos.

    4) Non-tinted glasses would be a nice option (I wear glasses IRL), but as someone mentioned in a previous post, would not be real likely within the EVE setting. Most people in EVE would not wear glasses as some form of vision correction via surgery or implants would probably be common and inexpensive.

    5) Body modifications are fine for the most part, however, a few more options should be added. Currently, it is not possible (as far as I know) to have earrings in both the ear lobe and upper ear. The ability to combine piercing options should be available for those that want to go the piercing extreme.

    6) The only small usability issue I had I mentioned in point 1, regarding making minor adjustments to body sculpting.

    7) I would like to be able to change the race/bloodline of a couple of my avatars. For example, Commander Starfox (one of my alts), no looks distinctly Asian, whereas originally, she seemed to be Caucasian. I was vaguely irritated by this (not that I don't like the new look she has). The ability to change race/bloodline should be allowed once to each avatar for free, to allow players to create the look they want. After that if they are not happy, perhaps allowing race/bloodline changes for a fee (similar to character transfers or portrait swaps) could be implemented.

    8) As for other suggestions, additional types of clothing (dresses, skirts, shorts, etc.) in addition to more styles of existing clothing types and additional hairstyles would be nice. The biggest thing that I miss, however, is accessories. Using the comparison of Commander Starfox again, she formerly had a comm headset and a HUD eyepiece. Things like HUDs, headsets, earpieces, hats, jewelry, and other types of accessories are sorely missing, and make it difficult (for me at least) to achieve the exact look desired for avatar.

I am looking forward to the rest of WIS (whenever it gets released), and the ability to interact with my fellow capsuleeers in ways other than shooting at each other. Making avatars more unique, like RL individuals are, would go a long way, IMO. I grow somewhat tired of seeing "cookie-cutter" avatar appearances, where everyone looks pretty much the same, with few exceptions (Large Collidable Object and Lady Harlot, for examples). Regardless, to all capsuleers,

    Fly safe

P.S. No offense or insult was intended to either Large Collidable Object or Lady Harlot. My personal opinion is that your avatars are hideous, yet I enjoy seeing them on the forums because they are a change from the drab, near-identical looks of almost everyone else out here (I include myself in this "cookie-cutter" group, btw). Good job on being original and creative, and achieving the unique, if somewhat disturbing, look that you have. Congratulations on achieving individuality in a world of clones. Big smile

Better options for grey hair - we can age our characters face but colour options for hair were limited to 'younger' colours.

More variety in backgrounds. Although superficially there are a good number to chose from by the time they are shrunk down to a small tile for chat windows you can't see the detail just the colour. This makes many of them look very similar.

This alt turned out a lot better than he was originally, but my main wants his long, straight hair back, as well as his robe and narrow facial features. He used to have a passable "evil scientist" look, but now he's more of a "kindly middle-aged father figure from somewhere in middle America". It makes for a good portrait, but it's not what I wanted and it's far too conservative for the kind of far-future society I always imagined Eve to have.

To be honest, I am very disappointed with the current direction of Eve's art style in general. When I first started playing this game, it had a strange but distinctive look to it. It could result in terrible ugliness at times, but it was self-consistent and greatly added to the feeling that, despite their human ancestry, there was something very alien about the people of New Eden. Unfortunately, we now have a growing collection of generic symmetrical ships, and avatars that mostly look just like the people you see on TV.

The character creator, as an avatar-generation system, is a great piece of technology; you just have it calibrated wrong for this game. I'm glad you turned the knob from Glittervamp to Hollywood, but you really need to keep going until you get to Transhuman.

Bloodlines should be a little more distinct. Maybe not as much as they were originally, but enough to make it plausible that these groups developed on different planets. Clothing and accessory options should be expanded greatly. Most of what we have now wouldn't be bad, as part of a much larger and more varied selection, but it doesn't stand on its own. We need utilitarian working clothes for miners and industrialists, lab coats for scientists, snappy suits for traders, and armor for warriors. All of it should have a strong sci-fi flavor. Don't be afraid to get a little crazy; we're talking about societies that couldn't get farther from 21st century cultural norms if they tried.

    • When you go through the character creator, is there anything that you find confusing or unclear and could be improved?

    • It seemed fairly intuitive once I tracked down someone with a computer capable of running it at an acceptable framerate.

    • Did you all notice the "tucking" options, that you can randomize the whole character (and each group), and toggle the clothes off?

    • I tucked in my shirt because I liked the belt that some of the pants came with. Unfortunately, it seems to have come untucked again in the CQ. Not sure what's up with that.

    • Now we have only facial tattoos... would body tattoos be something you would be interested in (and then how interested), even though you cannot see them in the portrait?

    • This would be a good option to have, but not now and not for me.

    • A few people have asked for normal glasses... would that be something you would be interested in?

    • Normal 21st century glasses? No. High-tech futuristic wearable display visors? Hell yes! Eyewear is fine so long as it appears to serve a non-medical function and doesn't look like something you could get at Lenscrafters.

    • Did anyone have problems with the body modifications, and if so, what did you have problems with?

    • I didn't realize I could adjust certain things until after I remade my main, though that may have been because I didn't have as much time as I wanted. I could only find one person with a system capable of running the character creator, and he was adamant that I get Eve off of it as soon as possible. It was also sometimes hard to get the desired amount of adjustment due to input lag, and that was on a brand-new 6-core dual-GPU system.

    • Are there any small usability issues that bothering you in the character creator?

    • Scrolling horizontally through large numbers of options was time-consuming and hurt my wrist.

    • Do you think players in general would be in favor of allowing bloodline changes, or are there just a few souls that are unhappy with their heritage?

    • Given how radical the changes to bloodlines were, I think it's only fair to let older characters switch bloodlines at least once. I'm sure a lot of players would get upset by this, but what aren't they upset by?

    • Any more suggestions? (other than "hey, we want more racial clothing" and "hey, we want no clothing restrictions").

    • I would like to be able to completely resculpt my main at some point in the future, when technology and my finances finally catch up to the character creator's insane system requirements. Others probably will as well, if new customization options are added. Maybe you could allow us to pay a PLEX or some Aurum for a complete redo? Or not restrict recustomization at all because it's stupid to think that people in the future won't at least know how to exercise to build muscles?

All in all the editor itself is great, I have made and will make alts just because I enjoy the creative possibilities it offers. (Yes there are players who enjoy both blowing up **** and space barbies :D ) UI is stylish and easy to use. I even used it earlier on a seriously underpowered hardware (sculpting and styling in low quality mode, then switching to HQ after posing in the portait phase). More content (haircuts, clothes and especially backgrounds etc) is obviously the main gripe for us all.

    - I'd like to have the option to view the final portrait snapshot in the large version before commiting. (512px)
    - Yes, noticed and played with tucking options. More of small, cool details like this please :)
    - Yes for body tattoos
    - No issues with body modifications

    - Usability issues:
#1 for me is the zooming in portrait stage. I'd like to have either keys or a slider for precise zooming, mousewheel is just too crude and especially terrible on low performance setups. Same problem with scrolling through options with the scrollwheel.
#2 It would be great to be able to pause the animation for surgical work!
#3 The activation area for adjusting head tilt is very narrow and in some poses/camera angles impossible to grab

    - Bloodline is bloodline and should not be changed
    - Having more options to fine-tune the lighting would be awesome ("free" move for direction)

Even though Caldari would be the last race I would chose now, I wouldn't want to change my bloodline now, since I got used to it. But I think it may be more important to warn new players that EvE is very different from other MMOs and you are most likely to stick with the first character you ever created.
When I created Zimmy as my first character (right, no forum alt!) I was a little lost among all the choices I had to do. So I asked the friend that brought me to EvE wich race was the best. I got the answer: "Caldari is the best race for beginners, and Achura is the best Caldari race. Males look odd, but the females are kinda cute." (ever noticed how many japanese schoolgirl-caldari were created around 2007/2008??)
Later I learned that there are races that use autocannons to fire nuclear warheads and other races that use huge friggin lazors to burninate the countryside, but I felt I had already invested too much into this character to start a new one (dunno, about 2 Mil Skillpoints- WOOT).
So a reminder would have been good at the start of character generation, something like

    Quote:
Warning! If this is your first ever Character in EvE online, please notice that the leveling system in EvE is different from any other MMO and you will most likely stick with your first ever created character as your main for the rest of the game. So chose your bloodline, name and appearance very carefully. There is no "best race" in EvE, every race can learn any skill they want. Your racial attributes do not affect combat performance at all.

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

Since a Dev is asking for feedback here, I'll give a random list of quibbles.

    • Vherokior face-masks. Where did they go?
    • Long male hair that isn't dreadlocks. Male Intakis in particular lost out on that androgynous mystic look.
    • Many races used to have a wider range of skin tones. Female Intakis could be tawny to downright swarthy. Now, they're all pale.
    • The 'monocle' and other optical implant accessories probably would've been better received if they weren't so expensive. Players like the bare cybernetics that make their characters look mechanically modified.
    • Purple, green and blue hair. Many of the Gallente had access to exotic hair colors, as befitting their culture. The best you can do right now is white with some colored streaks.
    • The Caldari backpack antennae. It was silly, but it really conveyed the feel that some militaristic Caldari would rather be unfashionable than go without their bulky comms equipment.
    • Togas. For some retro-classical reason, the togas on the Gallente looked futuristic.
    • Headsets, eye-pieces and other doodads. The thing that looked like a helicopter targeting receptacle over one eye was pretty popular for the Achura. Some scrolling text or other graphics could add flavor.
    • Remember the old 'sun goddess' headpieces on the Amarr ladies? The ones that made them look like royalty out of a Roman/Aztec fusion empire? Those were cool.
    • Robes. Not just for the Amarr, and not just in the style given. Kimonos would be interesting, particularly if patterened in electronic / space themes.

There's probably more, but the gist is there. Essentially, don't be afraid to go bold and over-the-top. Capsuleers are supposed to be an eccentric, wealthy elite in a very large and culturally diverse setting. A good number of them probably dress like Lady Gaga.

    As you asked.....

Options for things like eyes, hair, and some clothes: The little picture of it is so small that its hard to tell what you are selecting. There is alot of room on the screen, a bigger preview would be nice. I can just try each and see, but on my laptop that takes forever.

Some of the options, like the tuck option or portrait lighting options, are well hidden and not obvious. Maybe adding a little text?

The color pallet for eyes, hair and such keep disappearing on me. I have this habit of moving the mouse below the pallet while I think about my selection, resulting in it disappearing. Quite annoying, almost a "User hostile" behavior.

I did have issues with the sculpting. The issue is it is quite unclear how mouse movement translates into body shape, and very hard to figure out when the new shapes show up at the rate of one update every 3 seconds. Move mouse, wait wait wait, see a change.. Now what did that? Move mouse again, wait wait wait... why did it do that? ARG!!! Now repeat 10+ times for all sculpting options.

The range of hair and eye colors is quite limited. More please.

Ya know what I want to see? Fully synthetic capsuleers. Implants? More like brain modules! A fully synthetic capsuleer that can hot swap implants would be AWESOME! A one time conversion of your clone for an ungodly amount of isk. This replaces your clones apperance and it will look like a robot/cyborg. One thing is though, if you get podded, you lose the augmentation +implants.

Balanced? yes, it could even have a blueprint! Of course it could even be perverted by the demonic Aur system. But, isk will do it best.

I WANT TO SEE FULLY SYNTHETIC CAPSULEERS!!!

P.S: This would totally f-in rock! especially for 0.0 people who rat all the time but would risk their full lg snake set RATHER than their full crystal set for pvp without having to jumpclone for 24 hours!

    P.S.S: YES

    That's fair enough.

To be honest, I haven't been back to the character creator once I'd done mine. Partly as there wasn't much need (and not enough variation) and partly as I didn't want to make a mistake and lose what I already had.

Anyway, from my limited experience and reading this thread, it appears that the functionality is pretty much ok. The variety of assets is a much bigger issue and unfortunately one that will have to wait.

I completely understand (and agree) why WiS was done this way, but so many new EvE features are released, found to be a bit buggy and then pretty much left to rot. See Faction Warfare as just one example.

Until other levels of clothing like mechanic, workman, scientist and gang style clothing is added there is no way to add depth to the out of pod identity/ experince.

We are all pod pilots but have interests outside of it. A lot of players are going to want to go high end with their cloths but individualism is more important to some people.

The transition to having a life outside the pod has not been handled properly. When did we become pod pilots? How much of a life did we have before becoming pilots? How much of that past did we bring with us. These can all be answered quickly if we have the right tools.

The way the Character Creater and CQ where deployed has not helped the situation.

I know role play is a mixed topic right now are we playing ourselves in the game or are we playing the character identity we have chosen to play. These are all issues that a expanded character creater and cleaner intro can fix. Race and school needs to have some importance maybe choose them first then scolp the character after the fact with the school clothing available.

When I heard that all characters would start out in a rookie uniform that they could grow out of I was excited an interested. While not easy to emplement. Now that the tech is battle tested please add the tweaks that will make it memerable.

(it's fine that you bring up all the assets you find missing, or have problems with, but just so you know, my team and I are not very likely to be able to do anything about that, we are more focusing on the functionality of the character creator. And as you probably know, CCP's focus has shifted over to spaceships so I'm not sure the art team has the bandwith to address those issues, at least not now).

Then why waist your time? It's only a character creator and it has no real purpose other than that, now that WIS is no more.
