Can we get back to New Eden characters instead of WoD clones?

When the new character creator came about, there was a sudden change in the "image" of the individual EVE races.
That change being, they all look the same (except maybe amarr who came out pretty good). Lacking are race specific clothing and race specific accessories....which there are currently none becuase the powers that be felt they could just port WoD into EVE and no one would be the wiser. We look more like Blade Runnerish cyberpunks with bad tattoos than residents of New Eden.

I hope someday EVE will return to those days instead of making us all look like WoD clones (minus the vampire theme) which basically is what happened with the new character creator.

Clearly you haven't seen "Large Collidable Object" or "Ladie Harlot" - they don't look anything like the rest of us... Shocked

Truth of the matter is the more time that lapses, the less likely people will remember the old toons and become more accustomed to what we look like now. Cry

The races all look pretty distinct to me, and the character creator does allow extremes similar to what the old one had for the creative and motivated if you really want a Sebiestor that looks like a scary troll or Nosferatu, but I agree that I would like to see some more ethnic clothing and hairstyles for some of the bloodlines, like the Intaki need their cool samurai ponytails and flowing robes, Gallente need some choices that show a bit more skin, and everyone needs some hats.

As far as Blade Runner, I guess you may not realize that film has always been a huge influence on the devs.. it's been mentioned in the dev blogs before.

My alt (Minmatar Vherokior) looks about the same, plus a fancy jacket.

There was no way I could make this guy (Minmatar Sebiestor) look a malnourished 3rd-world space refugee, so I got as close as I could and figured he'd probably been eating better now that he's not an Amarr slave anymore and no self-respecting space pirate will go without shades and a wannabe-evil-Spock-beard.

Agreed. While some of that loss is from the character models being less toon:y and thus don't allow for the dame wide (bordering on silly) variety we had before. However, the loss in moving from outlandish and sci-fi deciration and apparel to the current batch of high-street 2010 reject fashion is much more detrimental.

We had some excellent (if quirky, but unique) designs that gave characters a very specific look. It would be nice to have that uniqueness return.

Why thank you, as the chosen race it is not that difficult to look awesome still its nice to get noticed. We do look rather good.

I agree with you, although not 100% the current Char creator is very impressive but what it needs is more Racial distinction in terms of clothing and cultural/tribal tatoos, scarring, hair and clothing, etc.

CCP did some excellent work for that when they starting working on ambulation, I wonder where it all went...

I used the old comic look and plexi-glass helmets for a few years and I have no desire to go back there.

"Players with old avatar appearances (Post-Incursion) are no longer forced to create a new character and can now have their old appearance returned to them by contacting the GM's via the petition system under the ‘Character Creation & Portraits’ category."

Was in the crucible 1.02 #1 server side patch notes. No idea if it works after making a new appearance...

I don't think all races/characters look the same. There is a lot of distinction but few players seem to use all the options they have or like to create the typical "supermodel face".
But I agree that race specific clothing is missing and I would like to have more more options for that. What we have is very boring right now (including the NeX stuff). There should be more science fiction elements to our clothing.

All the work is still there but with avatars being on the backburner for the time being and the focus being on spaceships, things in this area will happen slowly.

But it sounds to me that you guys generally like the new creator but are asking for more distinct varieties between bloodlines and perhaps special stuff for each one. I'm fairly certain that can be accomplished more easily in the new character creator than it could be in the old. In fact, if I have understood the guys working on the new creator, the old one simply could not be developed further. It was one of the oldest piece of technology in the game (since 2002 or so) and was in dire need of a revamp.

For example the option of giving your character a new haircut or dress it differently simply didn't exist in the old character creator - only a full remodeling was available (for a price). And adding that functionality would probably have taken a longer time than writing up a new one.

I'll make sure that the people that are still working on avatar get this feedback.

PS - I'm so much cooler now than I was before Roll

All humans look the same: two eyes, ears, one nose and mouth wtf?

I blame The Creator.

The avatars, while being high fidelity and all that, are bland and boring. For the most part they look like generic glossy barbie dolls and it takes heaps of effort to avoid that (I think I did decently with mine). They simply lack the aesthetics of EVE of old, like they gave the job to someone who didn't know about EVE and couldn't be bothered to dig into it's history and design language. Trying to reuse your efforts for two of your products can make good sense as long as it's under the hood, actually making them LOOK same ish is a big nono.

There's several things at work here;

- some people chose a specific race/bloodline because of the looks and with the changes they had no control over are suddenly forced to deal with possibly crappy looks or at least ones they didn't bargain for. If you're going to do something as drastic as a full avatar change either make all bloodlines aesthetically correct (I'd like that best) or give people the option to switch. I bet there's tons of older characters, from before the changes, who feel robbed of their identity and are annoyed by how their previous choices mess up their current options.

- Sebiestor especially got the shaft, I mean look at them, check out Chribba for instance, wtf is THAT. That has no resemblance to the old Sebiestor who were mad, quirky and insane looking. The current ones just look like they haven't seen the sun in a while.

- Gallente males, seriously

- more hair style options and redo most of the current ones.

- most of the "Eastern" bloodlines are just bad.

Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude.

Best statement I have read today. Italics are mine for emphasis.
