Data Site Scanning (3 of 5)

Mission briefing
Now you'll start scanning for each type of Cosmic Signature, something you can only do by using Core Scanner Probes.

First up is a Data site, and that means you need to fit to your ship the Civilian Data Analyzer you picked up earlier. Scan down the site with your Scanner Probes, find the container inside and hack it open with the Data Analyzer, then bring the results back to me. Your loot from Data sites will be useful for invention – a research process that produces blueprints for advanced Tech II ships and modules.

As a side note, while this training mission is perfectly safe, failed hacking attempts in general may cause the container to self-destruct and even cause damage to your ship - so be careful.

Data Site Scanning (3 of 5) Objectives
The following objectives must be completed to finish the mission:

Bring Item Objective
Acquire these goods:

Drop-off Location 0.9 Couster II - Moon 1 - Federal Navy Academy
Item 1 x Proof of Discovery: Data (1.0 m³)

Rewards
The following rewards will be yours if you complete this mission:
140,000 ISK

Bonus Rewards
The following rewards will be awarded to you as a bonus if you complete the mission within 5 hours and 36 minutes
136,000 ISK

I warped to the Anomaly training site and the certificate of proof was right there so I looted it from the container. I launched my probes and...nothing. I used my data analyzer and...nothing. Tried to use probes again and got the message that I was out of charges. First mission I haven't been able to figure out. Either bugged or just bad design or I'm too stupid to figure it out. The agent will not accept the certificate, says one or more objectives have not been accomplished. Anyone know this mission? Hoping to make exploring and PvP my careers.

No matter where you go...there you are.

You need to scan down the data site with the probes. Now I suck at describing how to scan in 3 dimensions in text form, so I will just leave the tutorial videos here:

Eve Online Flight Acadamy

Some of those videos are also aavailable ingame via F12.

You launch your probes by activating the launcher, similar to missiles.

Then you open the probe scanning window by pressing the button on the left side of the HUD circle at the bottom of the screen. You control the probes from this scanning window to send them in a pattern around the thing you're trying to scan, and to get the scan results. Also, to recall them to your ship when done.

After you're done and the probes have been recalled to your cargo hold, you can "reload" the probe launcher. So when you launch probes again, you're not "out of charges."

The certificate doesn't work because it's a Proof of Discovery, not a Proof of Discovery: Data. Wrong certificate.

Thank you both so much for the help. Between Archibald's videos and Memphis' explanation I was able to somehow finish the mission. I pretty much stumbled through it and need to practice to understand all the steps and not take forever. Thanks again.

The point of the mission is to teach you how to probe out people, for PVP.

So you launch the probes like they are missiles, then you open a different window to control them and get the scan results.

The probes last approx 1 hr in space, so you have to recall them to your cargo bay when you're done. Then you have to reload the probe launcher with them.

As far as the probe scan window, it's based on the intersection of spheres. You have 8 probes, and each of them can either "see" the target (it's in range of that probe), or "not see" the target (it's not in range). How far each probe can see is shown as a sphere, and if the target is within the intersection of many spheres, then you get a dot with an approximate location. And you can switch the probes to a tighter resolution (smaller spheres), and bring them closer to that dot in order to get a more precise dot. Until you get a dot with 100% precision, at which point you can right-click that location and warp to it or set a bookmark to go there later.

Finding players to kill is similar, with 2 differences:

- players don't stay still in one spot for 30 minutes or however long it takes you to play with the probes, so you have to learn to do it fast

- players can detect your probes from up to 14 au away, and will know that they are being hunted and will react accordingly.

So practice with the probing system so you can do it fast, and then read some more probing guides from the internet so you can use some of the tricks for finding people faster / guessing where they may be so you can skip some of the "more precise dot" steps.
