New player, struggling with Solar System Map controls

Hello!

I'll be very quick with this as it is only a small problemBig smile after hearing of the imminent release of Dust 514 for PS3 I decided to make a trial account on EVE on my iMac to see what all the fuss was about. I'm loving it so far but I'm having one small issue that seems to prevent me from completing the Exploration career tutorial.

When I am on the Solar System Map, I have no way of zooming in/out. I have tried my mouse scroll ball, I've tried setting hotkeys for zooming, but nothing works. This makes it nigh on impossible to use the scan probes to find cosmic signatures, so I can't find the training area and progress with this tutorial.

For your information, my mouse scroll doesn't work with the camera view either, but the hotkeys DO, if that makes any difference.

You might be able to use the hold-both-mouse-buttons-down-and-move-the-mouse-up-and-down method, but I'm not actually sure if your crazy Mac mouse will have two buttons so if not just ignore me...

Big smile you're absolutely right, my crazy mac mouse doesn't have two conventional buttons so I can't right-and-left click, not at the same time at leastX I suppose it's my own stupid fault really!

You might consider checking the Mac and "Issues/Workarounds and Localisation" forums. Since you're on a trial, you won't be able to post, but maybe the issue has been mentioned in there.

Thank you Velicitia, I will check that out now. I did search teh interwebs as my first port of call, but I didn't find anything specifically relative to my predicament.

Buy a cheap usb mouse, with two buttons and a scroll wheel. Should work fine, and only be a few (insert currency unit)

Makes life eaiser, when dealing with something that was designed for right clicks.

Might be the best option. I love my Mac mouse but it's just not practical in this situation.

Sounds more like a mac client issue to me as scrolling with a wheel indeed works fine in windows version.
Also make sure you're in the right window (accessed from your system canner window and not from the actual star map).

Tried accessing both windows (via map on the sidebar and from the scanner window) and neither one worked. I never realised they would function different, to be fair, but never mind. It might not even be a problem with EVE, as it's always been a temperamental little thing that scroll ball!

I expect your problem is the mouse itself, not EVE.

Scrolling with then Touch mouse works a bit too well (scrolling any non-Mac OS X application happens at supersonic speeds). The Magic Mouse with that silly little trackball is painful to use: mine will scroll just fine if I'm going down or left/right, but it refuses to scroll up. Thankfully I have a Logitech MX510, which I consider to be the best mouse ever: the only negative about this mouse is that it is sculpted for the right hand.

One option you could try if you have an iPod Touch or iPhone is an iOS application called "TouchPad", which interacts with your Mac using "Assistive Devices" to emulate a MacBook style touch pad (without the clicking).

I use an iMac and have had no problems with any of the UI, apart from the insane scrolling speed when using an Apple Touch Mouse (zoom from "face pressed against the hull" to "from here, the star gates look like ants" in one stroke of the finger).

One problem I've seen with the MX510, is that if you have oily skin, you'll get a build up of cruft on the buttons, against the central partition. and if you're not careful when cleaning it, it can jam under the partition, keeping the button held down. And then you have to take the mouse to pieces to sort it.

Recently replaced it with a G500, which doesn't have that central partition. Similar price. (And a weird free scrolling wheel. hit a button, then you can just spin it, rather than clicking it round)

So just to clarify, I may well be stuck until I get a better mouse. There's NO OTHER WAY to zoom in/out on the solar system map, right?

EDIT... just another quick update, this is starting to give me a headache! I've tried all of the cleaning methods short of taking the mouse to pieces (or smashing itEvil) but to no avail. A short summary of why this matter is now twisting my melon...


  • DOESN'T SCROLL AT ALL when on internet browser (Chrome)
  • DOESN'T SCROLL AT ALL on EVE (the main problem here!)
  • But it work perfectly on other games (Rome Total War and Civ IV). Funny thing is, to zoom in/out in those games rather than scroll up/down I have to scroll left/right... but other than that it works perfectly, hmmm

I am having a similarly annoying problem on a PC. When in space I can zoom in and out using Page Up, Page Down keys for planetary interaction and on my ship view. In stations, I can't, and I can't do anything with the solar system map at all using just keys. Why the zoom keys work intermittently I don't know, my pet theory is that the keyboard shortcuts only come active in space. I don't think my touchpad emulates a scroll wheel properly (it's Elantech) so I seem to be stuffed. Drivers etc all updated. Per the OP, I just can't use probes. I'm aiming to try with a mousewheel external mouse shortly, but I could see this being frustrating if you otherwise just use a touchpad, as I do.

At the risk of appearing to be talking to myself, I have finally managed to figure this out. I saw some references to an Elantech Touchpad driver that seemed later than mine, but thought this was for a different sort of pad. Both the Windows driver update tool and the Asus website thought I had the most current version of the driver.

However, as it turns out, if you search on the Asus support site for "touchpad" rather than letting it auto-search based on your model of laptop, you suddently get a list of 40+ different drivers to pick from, some of which were more recent than mine. As I had nowhere left to go at this point I grabbed the most recent version and tried installing it.

Bingo. Everything zooms as it should, using the multi-touch gestures on the touchpad. The driver I had was clearly seriously behind the times, and yet it took a manual driver install to cure it. The moral of this story being don't assume that the manufacturer update sites are current - dig deeper.
