Those who did not want their browser updated could opt out or uninstall the software, said Microsoft.

Microsoft said it had made tools that would let people avoid or uninstall the more up-to-date versions of the browsers if they wanted to stay with an older copy.

Anyone who doesn't know to do this, wouldn't know they were being silently updated or care one way or the other.

To beat such scams, Mr Gavin, said that once the latest version of the browser was installed all future updates would arrive silently and be applied without a user getting involved.

This is what Firefox has been doing already, for some months now. It's just them catching up really.

I'm actually disappointed, was hoping that Windows itself would allow the occasional silent update. Much better than today's setup where there is a possible lag between the announcement and the exploit actually being used widely (i.e. Conficker and other various worms).

Microsoft should just silently uninstall IE and install firefox and chrome on all computers. Anyone still using IE as a primary browser is bad enough, anyone using an older version of IE are comparable to the Amish, except they likely lack the skill to craft quality furniture, the great redeeming factor of the Amish and the thing that makes me love them along with their charm.

Based on my statistics of 25000 users 45 % of my users are Amish. So I am really happy MS finally decided to do this and I can stop supporting IE6,7 and 8 :)

Unfortunately, removing IE will not help the problem of vendors (old and new) using features that just work better in that browser. That includes hardware network consoles, such as our older tape library (which is not going away immediately).

I do applaud MS for trying to force the issue, it will help with the problem of outside vendors.
