It occured to me while reading this thread why I like Reddit better.

Seriously, look at the 1st page of R/eve. There are either funny (well, sometimes funny) propaganda or interesting things/videos from in game including kill/battle reports and generally just people talking 'mess' to each other and having a good time. And as of this moment I can't find ONE topic on that front page that is a whine about how mean people are in high sec. In fact very few of the current r/eve topics look like any kind of complaining about the game.

HERE on the other hand, the front page of general discussion is a neurotic whine zone. 1 post complaining about opportunities, another complaining about getting ganked in high sec, several complaining about citadels (ALL of which are from a high sec point of view), complaints about sensor overlays and even a semi-necro'd jump animation complaint thread.

Put another way r/eve is actually entertaining, this place is depressing as hell. TBH my posting here is more because I have friends here and checking these forums are a habit, but i think people who pay attention to my posts see that the tempo of my participation has slowed down for the most part. This forum is (and has been for a while) for people angry about EVE or angry at others for being angry about EVE, there is not much joy to be found here, whereas on reddit we have fun in a freer environment.

Try to look at things objectively, and ask your self if you were not you, but rather someone else (like a DEV), where would you probably prefer to communicate with players? I know that for me the answer would be r/eve if the alternative is this place.

I've been posting here for years, and I've only recently started visiting reddit. Tbh, reddit is just a better experience. There, the worst posters get a kind of social penalty for constantly posting bullshit, here the best you can do is use a very poor ignore function. And there is more freedom and less moderation.

Except "bullshit" actually means any unpopular opinion. If someone posts something contrary to the widely accepted opinion it gets downvoted into oblivion. The entire thing just breeds an environment where everyone says the same thing regardless of whether or not it's actually true and there's no critical thinking involved at all.

This is a good example of what I meant in my previous post. Man does this come off as super serious. r/eve seems to be a more light hearted place. While i haven't posted much there I have posted a few things that got a negative reply and I have yet to be 'obliterated' lol. I post there as Cassius Rex because that's the name most of my reddit friends know my by rather than Jenn.

I'm starting to think of it in terms of how preferences play out in game. I prefer null, it's less BS, less whining, more people having fun and the 'security' of the place comes from player actions (like intel channels). Likewise r/eve is kind of self moderating, it's PEOPLE downvoting the bullshit not moderator for the most part.

On the other side of the coin is high sec. I hate high sec, it's a dismal place where the game offers protection at the cost of any kind of fun or interesting stuff. It attracts (as full time residents) the kind of people who look at null (or low/WH space) as places full of big meanies who won't let anyone in because they gate camp and kill everything that moves. Anything fun is instantly CONCORDOKKEN. And like high sec, these forums are over protected, thus drawing the worst complainers because those complainers know their complaints are safe here. Complainers protected by forum mechanics (no down voting), where anything of real interest or fun will be ISDCORDOKKEN eventually lol.

Humans are emotional creatures that make irrational decisions and are generally bad at being objective. EvE has proven this over and over again to me.

It's generally only a whine zone because trolls (like yourself) feel the need to attack and ridicule anyone with an opinion that doesn't match your own, turning every single opinion into an argument with the usual crowd. r/eve has the same thing except it results in most players with an opinion that opposes groups like TEST being silenced. I'll take a place where topics float to the top based on their most recent contribution over one that's based entirely on votes from people who get high and frequent 4chan any day.

Jenn aSide wrote:

Probably is, because most of them aren't EVE players, and children tend to be more light hearted. If you find pepe funny, you'll like r/eve, and if you're employed (and not in a job that pays by the hour and makes you wear a hair net or take calls in a cubicle) you'll probably prefer the forums.

Someone in this very thread already said that wast majority of redditors do not care about this game. You just proved it.

If we don't speak about such complex things for me reddit is just another place to look when i'm away from forums. And you rightfully wrote 'sometimes funny' because for me it looks like 99% of posts get upvotes just because it is grrrgoons (FOTM). Yes, there are interesting posts (like battle reports) but i would not choose r/eve over these forums.

I would really like to see evidence that the majority or a large portion of r eve don't play eve? And now your starting to get ridiculous regarding that job remark.

Also this place being a whine zone is hardly due to the trolls of the forum, it's simply that people here are generally high sec Care Bears who come here after someone spanked them, their crap is punished in r eve, here it's encouraged. What sounds more like an accomplished group of adults, a forum which supports mindless complaints or moronic ones? Or a forum that actually sticks to what happens in game and Discusses it? Ironically goonswarm posts are often upvoted even though test should apparently "censor" it. And I already showed you can have it in a regular forum view, your points are moot.

This isn't evidence that suggests people in r eve don't care, actually lets think for a moment, eve is a game? Right? These people are clearly enjoying the game. Why would they not care about it?

How is this comment mature?

Looking down at other peoples professions is not really the prime example of someone being "mature". A job does not define you as a person and there are different factors that play into why someone has a particular job at a particular time.

What does "care about the game" have to do with anything? And why would anyone care about what someone else cares about anyway?

That's a big point. People on this forum take things WAY too seriously, I get the vision of people sitting in front of a computer typing furiously, not just because they are mad, but because they want to finish their post before that blood vessel pulsing in their forehead pops lol.

Reddit isn't just a better place to communicate imo, it's more useful. For example, last week my corp defeated a hot drop with mostly mining ships. One of our guys posted it on reddit, and even though I was working an extra shift at work, I was able to see it and feel pride and be amused while not even being in game. You don't get that from these forums, you come here and all you get is complaints and grown people yelling at each other over nonsense.

To each his own, but there is something else you need to consider. I can't find a single post r/eve complaining about these forums, whereas reddit gets mentioned here daily. Think there is a reason for that?

Aah, Reddit. Where Free Speech goes to die.

Freedom of speech includes the rights of the majority to silence ignore the opinion of the minority.

Just existing doesn't make you special.

Big difference.

Clearly you don't know how a democracy works, otherwise, how do you come across things like hate-speech? Sometimes if what you say is to incite violence or hatred, you find yourself arrested and in prison for quite a long time.

Without access to their servers (both reddit and CCP) it would be difficult to provide evidence for, but needless to say there are several players who post there we know to be permabanned, and I quite commonly see posts which either hint at or directly state that they no longer play EVE. We know people on this forum are subbed, because they can't post otherwise. I think that's a pretty good barrier for entry when discussing changes to mechanics.

Sure it is. If people like Jenn didn't feel the need to jump in to insult every player who had a bad experience, tell them how psychologically disturbed they must be for posting and telling them to leave, most of these threads would be a heck of a lot less hostile.

Davian Thule Pirkibo wrote:

Definitely the latter, as you can imagine. The problem is what you've got there isn't a good description of either side. I mean your forum side seems to be entirely talking about GD, since other forum sections are a lot calmer, and your description of r/eve sounds like you're talking about 3 posts a day. Most of the post on r/eve are meme posts, and nearly every post can be found to contain attacks and insults. It's like a primary school playground. Then from time to time they even have the fake B4R posts, which isn't just childish, it's downright disgusting. Feel free to try to justify that any way you want.

If this was reddit i'd upvote this lol. Us non-Dreddit TestBros gotta stick together, show a strong front against Dreddit Tyranny! Twisted

You bring up a good point though, I see more actual talking about what happens in game on r/eve than I do here. If a non eve player came and viewed this forum he'd think the game was nothing more than someone getting ganked in high sec, an overlay glitch, jump animations you can't turn off and an in game iterm give away from a guy who thinks the game is boring..

It's a mess, and this thread of jealousy and angst( because a superior discussion forum exists) is just a form of proof of how bad the situation here is.

I'm making a comment on the type of profession someone that likes to get high and finds badly drawn pictures of frogs with silly captions endlessly funny is likely to hold. A job doesn't define a person but what type of person you are certainly determines what type of job you will hold. This is another thing about this forum, on reddit I'd have not seen that basically elitist nonsense (because it would have been rightfully downvoted by actually decent human beings), here you can ignore function the worst trolls and still end up reading what they wrote. I mean really, looking down on people who work for a living? That guy deserves this place.

That's the point though, I'm not looking down on people who work for a living. I fully believe that someone who works for a living will work their way into a reasonably decent career path. There are many posters on r/eve have not exactly hidden the fact that they prefer getting high though, which in all honesty is likely to lead to worse career prospects.
