Is the bouncing EVE cat dead or not? When will you know?

1/5 staff is not a sign of the end. That was just the useless, the trainees, and the people who don't refill the coffee or wash their hands.
Jettisoning half the staff IS a sign of the end, but CCP haven't gotten that bad yet.

Time will tell. See how it plays out.
If they announce the end, though, I am going for broke in a blowout of suicide ganks, pvp, and blatant griefing.

it's both alive and dead, in a state of quantum flux, until the time that the flux is resolved by observation

meaning the cat exists in both states on the quantum level, until you look to see if its alive or dead

Did CCP overplayed their hand? Yes, they did.

Where did it all go wrong? From here I'd say trying to develop *2* new games while severely neglecting the first and only game that creates their income.
Topping that off with some leaked letters and email, with descriptions of their subscribers as 'golden goose' and 'cash cow', which I think you may freely visualize in your head even may think, but you never ever should put that thought how you think of those who pay you, in print. Because that kind of ugliness always comes out and as we all know, bit them quite extensively in the butt.

EVE in it self is unique. Once you even hint at it becoming not unique, pay to win, play for free or whatever, in the sense that is being used by all the obnoxious unimaginative wow clones, then you push quite a lot of people away that do not want to have anything to do with this kind of games.
Don't forget you have to invest a lot of time into EVE to get something back. If the developers suddenly decide to make a U-turn, or hint at it while people have the nightmare of SOE SWG in their back of their head, it is not so strange people leave in droves. Not to mention that if monocle-gate was handled by a more mature dev then Zulupark, the fire may not have burned that long.

Only way to get the people back is by getting their trust back. This is not done over 1 night. It will take many month's to get those who left or others to replace them back. You are asking too much, too soon. These things takes time. Trust was broken, now it needs to be mend.
First steps are made. Lets see where the next ones lead. Only time will tell.

Place your Op in a years time. Let see what has happened in between. Again you are to soon expecting the damage done to be fixed.

After all this is EVE.
You earn trust. You never get it and it is so easily lost.

EVE faces some increased competition over the next few months.

What exactly would those competitors be ?

I am not aware of any upcoming or recently launched games that could be considered competitors for EVE.
Perpetuum is the only one that qualifies, but that one has been around for quite a while and it's not exactly an impending threat.

Or maybe you know something I don't know ? Care to share ?

And no, SW:TOR is not one either.
Would you consider Mike Tyson a competitor for Garry Kasparov ?
Plenty of games were touted as "EVE killers" by various pubbies at various points in time, but so far most of them were not even the same genre, and those that were close were no threat at all.

Thanks for the constructive reponses Doc Fury, Crumplecorn and Hainnz.

As a data mining type of person I would love to know what type of metrics CCP are using to measure success with the latest release of patch/content.

All Icelandic companies are required to file accounts. CCP's annual accounts will be available at the end of the year unless they have the ability to defer posting them and choose to do this (I have no idea if this the case). You can compare turnover and profit to previous years although this year will have both the dip from Incarna plus the re-subs from Crucible.
Ah, an excellent indicactor I had forgotten about that one.

And thank you predictable trolls. I see posting after only reading the subject line is still in vogue.

Companies can quote crap at you until they're blue in the face but the bottom line measure of success is always the same.

I am more interested in seeing if CCP try to bring back the cold harsh feel of this game (which I feel has been lost) or if they lame it down a bit to encourage the less dedicated playerbase. This in my opinion matters more than anything.
