My Mining Future. (Best Ship for Transport?)

Hey all, I am currently sitting here mining and planning out my skills.
I have been thinking about how I want to do things in the future.
Currently I am in a Venture Mining Kermite. I use a Miasmos to cart the ore to a more proffitable system.
Working on getting my skills up to use a barge.

Looking further than that I want to be able to cart the ore on my own and have been comparing all of the Freighters in the game.

Before I go and buy the relatively expensive skill book I thought I should ask if I am thinking correctly as I tend to misunderstand some ships usage at times, being a new player.

After comparing the Obelisk, Charon, Providence and the Fenrir I am thinking that the Charon is the ship I want. I have made this choice mostly based on the cargo capacity.
Should I be looking at other things before making this decision?
Should I be looking at other ships?
I hope I have zoned in on the best set of ships for the job at the very least. If not, let me know that too.

I just want to be able to mine my eyes out and once a week go on shipping runs. That is my thought at least.
I also figured I could do some shipping runs for other players with one of these ships on the side.

P.S. I am really enjoying this game and wish I would have gotten into it much sooner.
I may have fell into a hole here that I might never get out of. :)

Some tips to help you on your journey.

1) Never use autopilot
2) It's safer to make multiple cargo runs in a cheaper ship, than it is to haul everything at once
3) Don't fly what you can't afford to lose. If you buy a freighter, make sure you have enough money to buy another should it get ganked
4) Learn which systems are hotspots for ganking, plot routes around them
5) Learn who CODE. and James 315 are, and make sure to add known gankers to red in your contacts
6) Dock-up when you see reds in local
7) Join a mining corp, they'll most likely be able to boost your yields with an Orca, increasing your profit, and also provide you with advice. They may also be able to haul the ore for you, so you don't have to spend a huge amount of ISK on a freighter
8) Lastly, when/if you buy that skillbook, inject it immediately, never carry skill books in your ship's cargo

Welcome to Eve. It is a great game and you have only gotten your toes wet.

Pix gave you some good advice. I would follow it closely. In addition, I would like to point you towards some of the specialized industrial ships. There are several of Gallente make for example that will allow you to maximize for a particular type of cargo and not be hindered by module choice in the low sections, the area where larger hold can trade off for other modules that may give you better utility. Some of these are the epithal for planetary industry, the kyros for mineral transport, and the nereus for a drone bay to give you some options. These ships come in very handy down the road, and lead you to the viator, a great little cloaky hauler.

An iteron V( gallente industrial) is a low skill hauler. With level 5 skills and t2 rigs it can haul about 40k m3. From there you would really need to go to a freighter for hauling ore. Edit to add: Forgot that they changed industrials. Gallente has ore specific and mineral specific industrial that will allow you to get around 60-65k m3 of ore or minerals without needing to use slots for cargo expanders.

If your mining for profit:

1- multi boxing is necessary to have a decent income.
2- high sec is rather crap for mining. If your mining for profit you need to be in 0.0 which requires a different set of ships. also its actually safer to mine in 0.0 for the most part than it is to mine in high sec.
3- Ore compression is a must if your going to be hauling it around. Hauling large quantities of uncompressed ore is going to take you forever.
4- In 0.0 ( and possibly in high sec) its probably more profitable to sell the ore locally or produce goods( such as ships) and sell those locally.
5- Freighters for high sec, jump freighters for 0.0. you could also check into various legit freighter services. You have to weight the risk vs reward of this. Is it worth taking a freighter of ore 10 jumps to a major hub for an extra 30 - 40 mil? probably not.

If your mining for fun and to support mining for fun:

1- Sell it locally. Your going to grow very tired of having to haul ore to market. Spend the time doing something you enjoy.

I don't use auto pilot. To dang slow anyways.

It makes sense that it is safer but I am willing to risk it as we are talking something like 10 runs as opposed ot one. Though maybe that will change when I am out of hi-sec.

I heard this from the beginning and totally understand it. Not going to fly anything I can't replace.

I am already becoming versed in using the map filters to see people that are in regions and how many pass through. I will be sure to do my research when it is time to go into higher risk areas.

I have indeed heard a bit about people ganking miners. I am ready for it.

Have yet to see one red, but again, I am still staying in hi-sec.

I don't plan on joining a corp. For my own RP style reasons. I do realize this is hurting me in the long run and maybe I will change my mind one day, but as of now I am going to roll with it. See where my plans take me.

Yep, I certainly wouldn't carry around anything that I need to consume, or anything like that.

I will take what you guys said into account.

I do sell "somewhat" local. I won't go all the way to Jita for bigger proffits if I can sell it 3 jumps away for only a small loss in profit. But I rather take only a few loads a week then 30 if that makes sense.
I have calculated what it costs to send stuff via others and it so eats into the profit that it isn't worth and to be honest, I would prefer to do it myself. I enjoy the restrictedness of this game and enjoy making it on my own if that makes sense.


I have not looked into ore compression yet. I am going to do this right away.
There are so many things this game throws at you and you try to keep up but it can be hard at times to remember to go back to the things you make a mental note to do.


My current ship can't handle 0.5 space. Well, it can, but when NPC's get past my shield I don't like it. I have been sticking to 0.7 or 0.6 as I can do those fine and the Kernite is decent profit for me right now. So with that, I don't think I could do any 0.0 yet. At least I didn't think I could. Is this not the case?

But the cost of an industrial is maybe a couple of million. the cost of a freighter is 1.4 billion. That is something that needs to be considered.

They wont show as red unless you, your corp, or your alliance sets them to red, or they are a war target.

To leave high sec you will absolutely have to join a corp and probably an alliance or you will not survive. If you stay in high sec mining solo is possible.

thoughts on ships: some of the mining ships are tankier than others. so make sure you learn which ones are higher production and which ones are able to take a beating. In some cases, its better to have a ship that can take a beating and mines less ore than have one that mines faster or can hold more.

Train into a Procurer, and then into a Skiff. When you get a good handle on the game you can decide if you want to risk using a Retriever or a Mackinaw. Hulk is a fleet ship, and without an Orca and/or hauler will actually net you less ore due to the small ore hold.

Learn how to compress your ore! It is so much easier to move and sell. You can even move compressed ore with your Skiff or Procurer, thereby nullifying the need for a Freighter to move alot of rocks.

If you need to move a large volume, setup a courier contract with one of the reputable hauling corps. Red Frog Freight is a good example. I wouldn't train for a Freighter if I was solo, it just isn't worth the investment imho. Train for a Deep Space Transport instead.

Compressing your ore in a small pos with a compression array is quite cheap if you anchor and online it once per week for ~2 hours to compress all that you mined, using a miasmos to do the trip from the station to the pos.
If you offline and repackage the tower right after finishing you dont really have a chance of losing it, just put a little bunch of strontium just in case.

This way you will no longer need a freighter, that needs escort anyway, for a deep space transport. These ships are 1/5 the cost of a freighter and can tank like battleships, way more than enough to prevent gank as long as you don't autopilot of course. And with the transport ship skill at IV, you have a fleet hangar of about 60k m3 for the Bustard, plus a cargohold of 5k m3.

If you start hauling a DST full of compressed ore, knowing even kernite can be worth billion for 60k m3 of compressed units, make sure to learn about the mwd+cloak trick and to how fit correctly your dst.

You actually have a good rig set for HiSec mining. Move into a Procurer and look for Glaze fields as soon as you can afford it. The Misamos is a great little hauler and fitted correctly it can avoid a lot of problems in HiSec. Recall that HiSec isn't about maximum profit, it's actually the lowest profit area. A fully loaded base Miasmos with White Glaze is worth around +/-12 Mil ISK in cargo so it's borderline profitable to gank with a decent ship, but less so for a small group. So going larger will only increase your gankability.

Take the advice about CODE and other nere-do-wells that want your stuff. Don't become their asteroid.

Convert that Venture into an exploration miner and see if you can get into null sec and hit up some more lucrative ores. You can try it in Wormholes but they have a very low life-span that way... don't ask me how I know!

It took me a month once trained into Retrievers (2 Accounts) to get 700 mil in Hi-sec. Now that is a weekend.

moved to null and branched out, personally I enjoy ratting. And reprocessing the crap drops gives a nice side business.

look into PI also.

Definittely compress your ore.

Thanks everybody for all the great replies. I am reading everything and taking it all into account.

I am wondering if any of you can answer a question about ships in general.

For instance, as it pertains to pvp I am trying to figure a baseline for how the ships stack up against each other.

I have read that a Frigate or Destroyer can kill a Battleship if the pilot sucks, but what I am wondering is, can two equally skilled pilots, both "fully" trained to use their ships, one in a Frigate or Destroyer and one in a Battleship, fight each other and the Frigate or Destroyer come out on top?

Is this a case of bigger ship, different purpose thus it is slow and not meant to fight a Frigate?
Or in the case mentioned above, should the Battleship always win?
This is not taking into account special ships.
In fact, these two ships.

Megathron Vs. Catalyst

To me it just seems like the Megathron should roll the Catalyst every time no?

I am trying to think of the correct way to convey my question.

Can a Leviathan take down Frigates and Destroyers and whatnot? Or would it just miss all day long and it is really only meant to take on other Titan's or one step down classed ships?

Can someone get in a Titan and pretty much rule the area or is it more like, the Titan needs to be protected so that it can fight the other titan.

I hope this made sense. lol

Oh, and I also would like to own a Megathron and a Widow eventually. Both look awesome. The Widow seems like a sneaky little backstabbing SOB that I want to get acquainted with, and the Megathron just because it looks serious and I hope it is as serious as it looks.
This is just throwing that out there kind of thing. Not looking to heavily at that stuff just yet.

It's more a matter of how the ships are fit than big beats small or more SP beats less SP.

A battleship that is not equipped to fight frigates won't be able to hit them. If he is equipped - bye bye frigate.

Classic example is a bling fit PVE battleship running L4's being baited into attacking a small ship that is stealing his loot. The BS won't be able to hit him in a fast, tight orbit. Question is whether the small ship can do enough damage to take down the BS without calling for help.


-- As to your freighter question. A freighter is better on an alt account. It's too long of a train of a niche skill for a new player on his main. If you decide otherwise - get the Providence - it looks the best.

Hint, check out the public citadels in your area, there are a lot with 54% base refine rate and only 0.1% tax. The structure browser is your friend. Plagioclase is the most profitable ore in highsec right now. But don't expect to get rich from mining, it's a good second "job" for an idle char doing trading/production for example but any other active profession nets you more ISK and (IMO) fun per hour than mining.

I use a Kryos to transport refined or bought minerals, it has a special hangar for it ~60k m3 depending on ship skill level.

I'm my own NPC alt.

4) Learn which systems are hotspots for ganking, plot routes around them
5) Learn who CODE. and James 315 are, and make sure to add known gankers to red in your contacts
6) Dock-up when you see reds in local, or at the very least align out towards a safe or an insta-dock spot.
7) Join a mining corp, they'll most likely be able to boost your yields with an Orca, increasing your profit, and also provide you with advice. They may also be able to haul the ore for you, so you don't have to spend a huge amount of ISK on a freighter
8) Lastly, when/if you buy that skillbook, inject it immediately, never carry skill books in your ship's cargo
9) You will lose ships, don't let it bother you too much, in fact look at is a learning experience and even a chance to have fun.

Open 10+ accounts, train one into a freighter, one into an orca and the rest into skiff. Mine almost completely AFK while playing something else. Victory can be yours.
