No, I'm not (technically) a newb -- but the first one couldn't have known that.

Rolled up new char on trial account, to try the experience of new-player-introduction.

Within minutes of starting, had a message on Corp channel, inviting me to answer and "win" from 1 to 5 ISK. I reply, and am told that the other "bloke" is CEO of the Corp (which it being an NPC corp was to me uniikely in the extreme).

He then demands 10% of my ISK.

When I point out that this is scammery and that this is a newb system, he tells me that scamming is allowed.
When I point out that this is a newb system, I am told that it isn't -- I am then threatened by two more "Corp" members (presumably his buddies) with being banned for scammery and threats.

If this is what real newbs go through, then I am not surprised that most simply log off and never come back.

Comments, please [from anyone but the 3 herbs who decided to try to pull this]

thank you.

wow, trying to scam noobs for 10% of their ISK? that's pretty pathetic.

10% of not much is, well, even less.

if this is going on in the newb corp chat channel, then yes, definitely file a ticket.

as other's have said file a ticket. CCP will be able to go back through the chat logs and see what was said and make a determination.

A whole new level of idiocy..personally this is something I'd have ignored even as a newbie and promptly block them. Hopefully most people are intelligent enough to realize it's a scam like you. Scamming itself is fair game on Eve, but scamming via threats of administrative punishment is a big no no.

CCP is not going to be pleased by those guys' shennanigans. At least a couple could get banned. It could save at least some new players some hassle.

Scamming in the NPC Corp chat is perfectly fine. The NPC corps are full of rich, veteran players and their alts who do not have any special protection for being in that Corp just like they don't if they choose to mine or set up a POS in a rookie system.

Scamming 1-day-old new players is not however (not to mention stupid and an incredible waste of your time to go after a few thousand ISK) and I am sure CCP takes a dim view on that no matter what channel you try to do that in. Just file a ticket and CCP will mete out the appropriate punishments or warnings for these fools.

I fully agree, note down their names and file a report. I might have an inkling who would've done this, and if so, it's probably their idea of a joke... or it could be some fresh alts who decided to screw around, that happens every now and again. Regardless, send a ticket/report, what they did was crossing the pale.

Thank you all for your advice.

I now learn that one of the "gentlemen" involved has elected to bounty me :: clearly he and his friends plan on collecting that bounty as an excuse for griefing me -- I have therefore decided, since the original idea was to re-test the New Player Experience ands since, as a carebear on my Main, I don't consider gankage a legitimate part of that Experience (certainly not while you're still in your rookie ship, in your rookie system) I am going to cut my losses and liquidate Adamalle and start a new Chara.

Thank you again for your helpful responses :: at least I know that not everyone thinks that scammage of Newbs is a legitimate sport in EvE.

If you're talking in chat, then he will most likely not be in the same system as you.

Also why would his corp members threaten you with bans for scam and threats, when you didn't scam?

That does not solve the problem it only prevents one person from having to deal with it. How many others are not as well versed in the ways of EvE and fall for this type of crap and then leave the game and never come back.

The bounty placement is another issue to be dealt with. Anyone that has been in the game for a few months likely knows that a bounty in this game is worthless and likely that it will never be collected. For most of the true new players I have dealt with that is not the case and it has and I am sure will in the future drive players out of the game before they learn that bounties are meaningless.

You need to report them so they don't do this to others. CCP doesn't take kindly to scamming noobs.

Name me one, just one, player who fell for this _or_ left the game because some dimwits wrote bullshit in a chat channel. I would be offended if anyone would try to hold my hand while ignoring idle threats and I am quite sure any new player will feel the same.

Most if not all other MMOs do a lot more hand holding than Eve. I can see how any reasonable person coming from another MMO could assume that CCP would prevent certain activities that it actually not only allows but encourages. So I don't blame converts from making certain assumptions at first.

However once you experience something like that there are two basic reactions. If you are the type of person that says to yourself "oh cool they aren't going to hold my hand and I'm responsible for taking care of myself" then Eve is the game for you.

If on the other hand you are the type of player that says "I can't believe they let this happen someone needs to do something" then Eve won't be for you and you should probably leave the game at that point and save yourself the trouble and the rest of us the drama.

I could give you at least twenty that I know from my personal life, but then it really would not matter because you still would not believe me because you have not experience it yourself and you do not know anyone that has.

Already off to Doomheim... well, if it is an experienced player then it's probably easier to restart the alt than deal with the bounty and such off hand.

I'm all for new players getting a taste of the harsher side of EVE pretty fast but right off the bat when your brain is still swirling with 'what does this button do?' or 'how the heck do I even steer this ship!?' is not an appropriate time for that taste.

It really doesn't matter what other MMO's do or don't, there's a fundamental human process of learning that you have to account for. You can't drop a 5 year old into a college level physics class and say "Hey, deal with it kid." You'd have a remarkably low success rate for kids getting it. It's the same in EVE.

I've long advocated for a much better new player experience. I'm only 3 months out of that experience so I still recall it well enough.

Protected star systems (frigate size or smaller, no chat other than rookie/mentor, immediate Concord response).
Paid, vetted, Mentors.
Better training paths ('I wanna know it all before I leave', 'I just need to know how to mine/fight/build/sell', or 'Get me the heck outta here, I want to fly!').
Graduate course (What to expect beyond that first gate, Finding a good corporation, Resources to study on your offline time)

Ditch all the older garbage and make it a human experience.
