I friend who's been playing a lot long then me said they would send me some money and a couple items to help me get going a bit better. Is trading done by the contracts, or how is it done?

When you are docked in station, there is a Market button on the left of the screen. It has sell orders and buy orders. You can sell directly to a buy order, or you can make your own sell order etc.

There are many forms of trading in Eve and also lots of guides for all the activities. You can start by looking into station trading, since this is what I think you are asking. Jita or Amarr are good stations to look at. It is also possible to create an own tradehub, do speculation or buy from one location and have someone else haul it to another tradehub.

You might also want to have a trading alt, so your main doesn't have to be constricted to the station(s) of choice.
