Can someone take a look at this picture and tell me if I've understood everything I've read over the last few days ?

I read that to keep a supply chain running at full capacity

The confusion i have is where it says 'A P2 needs 2 P1 facilities' - does this mean that (for eg) to keep a Biocells (p2) factory supplied takes two biofuels (pi) and two precious metals (p1) = four factories, or just 1 biofuel and 1 precious metals = two factories.

The same ambiguity applies to each level - so I'd just like to check I understand the quantities before I go building.

You need 1 of each type. While it takes twice as much P1 to make a P2 as a P1 factory puts out, P1 factories run at 30 min increments while P2 and above run at 1hr increments.

Also not all P4s use 3 P3 inputs, some use 2*P3 and one P1

Basically, yeah you pretty much understand it. Except, as noted, not all P4s are created equal.

I'm assuming, from that chart you linked, that you're doing Extraction->P2 setups initially? I find these to be less than efficient as ECUs chew up insane amounts of powergrid and balancing the inputs is something of a challenge.

Extract -> P1 on extraction planets then crack those into higher tiers on factory planets will result in a higher yield, however it does require a little more *effort*.

Tbh I included the ECU's just for the sake of completeness.

Depending on the figures Excel spits out I was actually thinking about buying the raw materials. I need to figure out if the additional cost of purchasing the p0's is offset by the fact that I can run more factories, running at full production more of the time........ if you see what I mean :)

My $0.02:
Under no circumstances should you ever build a PI chain predicated on mass hauling of P0 materials.
Down that road, madness lies.

You can setup single planet P1-P3 chains, or P2-P4 chains, pretty easily that have an OK output. Buying the occasional load of a material to offset extraction shortfalls is one thing, setting up a chain that requires mass hauling of P0 is something else entirely.

Seriously, the less time you can spend trundling around in an Epithal or; Bob forbid, a Freighter, the better. My P1-P2 factories run with 22 processors, two launchpads and two silos. They only need fiddling with every two days. By using the POCO as storage space, I can cut my visits to the planet down to every 4-5 days'ish while they spit out 2,640 units of P2 a day.

Setup your chains to minimise hauling. You will not regret it.
