Someone explain the new map to me

Okay. I wanted to see a route between two points on the map. I'm currently sitting in Amarr, so I set my destination as Odette with Dodixie as a waypoint so I could see the route between those two systems.

This is what it looks like on both of the maps, side by side: http://i.imgur.com/osTsZfP.png

The route on the old map on the right is obvious. You can very clearly see the route your ship will take.

It's not so obvious on the new map. For example:

1) Why does it not show a direct route between Odette and Egghelende?
2) Why does it show a route from Odette down to Stegette, across to Aliette, and then to Egghelende?
3) What is the significance of the dotted line from Stegette, and the one between Egghelende and Aurcel?
4) Why is there a bolded line from Egghelende to Ation, and from Stegette to Ravarin?

Any help would be appreciated What?

Wish I could give you an answer.

Personally I don't like the new map and prefer the old map.

I'm with DMC on this one. I don't use the new map I use the old one. CCP has been on a trend of making things prettier but less functional in recent years.

I didn't like the old map either. The new one is pretty awful too.

A decent Cartographer is what is needed here. Maps have many different purposes and if you don't have a well defined purpose for the map you get what you see in this new map and the old one.

Space game maps have been around since the first computer space games. You need a map to get from A to B. EVE has about the weakest map system I've ever seen for such a high power game. Even a classic hex or grid system with +/- Z axis labels in 2D would be better than what I'm seeing.

I'm not really sure but I think its because the 'pathfinding' now always attempts to make you go into low/null sec last.
(You know, for people that really don't want to but can't bother to LOOK where the 'set destination' will make em go)

As such, pathfinding has a choice between making you go to odette (low sec) or the neighbouring 0.5 system, and so chose the 0.5 . From there, in didnt HAVE a choice to make you go into low sec.

Basically a pretty examplary case of terrible pathfinding.

I've noticed this a lot in pathfinding on the fringe of low sec where sometimes setting a destination will mark the prefered route doing a huge 10+ jump detour instead of just hopping through a low sec system for a 2 jump route.

You have control over this. You can choose faster route or safer route and you can choose how much weight to give to safety if you like.

Eh, I don't actually use the map for trip planning, it pretty much doesn't work well for me.

If it's a long complicated trip, I use Evemaps on Dotlan.net for planning. Short trips, I use the route bar and shift my path around manually to optimize the route. I did a 20+ jump route just last night manually. It's pretty easy once you get to know your neighborhood. Going outside my comfort areas, I always double check Dotlan.net.

It's shiny sparkly! That's pretty much all it's good for.
Use the old one. It's better.

Next to the word "Route" in the upper-left-hand corner of the screen where your route information shows there is an "A". Click on that "A" for route options.

If you don't see any of that you'll need to play around with the triangles in that part of the screen to get them to show.
