Hi! Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I guess many people here move large amount of items around.

I haven't been playing EVE for around 2 years so I'm a bit out of the loop and I'm interested what is the freight ganking situation at the moment. What kind of cargo value are you guys comfortable transporting around in a freighter?

If I remember correctly you used to be pretty safe if you were staying at 1B and below. Is this still the case or did things change a bit since?

Typically I sit around 1 B as you mentioned. Now we have the option to fit three low slots thay doesn't require cpu, so bulkheads are a really good choice to prevent gank attempts in .6 or lower. Haven't been ganked since while I afk.

Also code is still around even though lots of their corps dropped. I haven't seen them much lately but I still see juicy killmails

http://xyjax.com/optimizer_kronos/ is a really good calculator for napkin-math estimates of how profitable it is to gank your freighter.

tl:dr:

  • in 0.9/1.0 space, with 3x Reinforced Bulkheads, you're not profitable below ~1.5B in cargo.
  • in 0.5 space, you're profitable above ~400M, so really at that point it's about being less attractive than other freighters.

If you really want to know what gets killed, go look at kills.

Obviously if you're talking about ganking you can ignore all the kills outside high sec. Additionally, you want to ignore kills that involve wardecs. Not that you can see wardecs, but look at the ships involved... a solo freighter kill with a hecate is a wardec. Battleships, yeah wardec. Also looking at names, it's a pretty safe bet that kills by a group like Vendetta Mercs aren't ganks. So once you've eliminated all those, you can see who's actually dying to ganks.

Certainly the more you carry the more risk you're in. But as long as you're well below the values of the ships that are getting ganked, you're not likely to join their ranks.

Also gankerlookout.com is around. IDK if it was around when you left but it's helped me out a lot.

Route traveled and when you travel also play a big factor. For example, when hauling stuff from our former home of Otela to Oisio, because it is not a commonly traveled route, there were no problems. On the other hand, Nijaria is a .5 between Amarr and Jita that often has gankers.

The large gank fleets pop EMPTY freighters ALL THE TIME. I believe they gank every slow boater they can on principle. Don't use cargo expanders, tank and it will take quite a large fleet to take you down.

The difference in the 3 slots/skills you get can make your EHP 150K to over 300k, and I know how I could push the EHP further with a couple of the mechanics, hull upgrades, armor, shield management etc. that I'm missing.

But if they want to take you down, they will.

Choosing the (least) violent of the major trade hubs to use probably goes a long way too.
