What happens to the ISk?

I placed a Buy order for a certain item.

I then decided to hold off on that item, so I lowered the Buy order to basically nothing. I noticed that my wallet did not change at all. What happens to that ISK that I used for the buy order to begin with? Do I lose it?

The ISK is held in escrow. It is returned when the order is cancelled or expires ("Market Escrow Release" appears in journal).

What if you UP the buying price? do you get charged for that extra ISK once you buy the item, or does it take it from your wallet right then? it seems an odd system

If you do not have Margin Trading Skill you must have all the ISK for the buy order held in escrow.

So increasing the price of a buy order will force you to put more ISK into escrow but decreasing it does not return your escrow.

But you do eventually get it back, right? I honestly have never noticed!

Yes, if the order expires or you cancel it, you will get any unspent isk back.

However, brokers fees are lost regardless of what happens with your market order. If you raise your price, you'll be charged extra fees based on the additional funds put into escrow. If you lower it you'll pay an insignificant minimum broker fee.

Faction standing with the faction owning the station can have a big influence on you brokers fees. Corporate standing to a lesser though still significant extent. The broker relations skill can also help.

Extra escrow is taken if the order is increased. However escrow is not released (even partially) when the order is decreased. The ISK doesn't disappear but you do end up with more money in escrow (potentially more than 100% of order value) if you keep lowering and increasing the price. The broker fee is non-refundable as was mentioned.

Thanks for the replies! I knew the broker fees were lost no matter what but was confused on the escrow.
