I am just wondering whether people are getting better FPS generally with the closed-source AMD Catalyst driver or the open-source alternative when using ATI graphics cards.

Catalyst is problematic to install for me so if the open-source drivers are just as good then I'm happy to continue using them.
Incidentally I'm getting better FPS on Linux with open-source drivers than XP with Catalyst - 30 average vs 27 average. That's with three clients on lowest settings and HD5770 card.

Radeon Open Source (in my case RadeonSI) atomize Catalyst. On my 7970, if I put Interval Immediate, I go to 150fps in space and up to 210 in station, everything to high. And it get a very lew CPU usage, like 30%.

I don't know about Radeon, but look if it support ixit native D3D9 stuff, the gain using that instead of the Wine D3D->OpenGL conversion layer is big.
