Exhumers.........could have been a little creative on the design CCP.

I'm a new player really and am generally very happy with most aspects of the game. However, I have decided to concentrate on mining and production/industry so have got myself into an exhumer to do some pro mining and was pleasantly surprised by the difference between the Venture and the mining barges.....but feel a little let down by the uninspirational design difference between the barges and the exhumers.

Surely, you (CCP) could have come up with a slightly better visual design for exhumers other than just the same design as the barges with a slightly different paint job....so that those who make it into an exhumer actually feel good about getting there after so much training. The stats are fine in the exhumers but you could have done a better job of making the exhumers look a little different/flashy...imo.

Yes...I might be nit-picking by some folks standards but a cool looking exhumer would have been nice after all the effort to get there.

Pretty much all (maybe even actually all) the T2 ships in the game are based upon T1 hulls.

but what would I know, I'm just a salvager

A Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is also just a beefier Mitsubishi Lancer with a slightly different radiator grille. And that's basically what T2 ships are. After all, to get a T2 ship, you take the T1 blueprint and turn it into a T2 blueprint through invention.

That being said, some T2 ship models have notable differences compared to their T1 counterparts, such as the Onyx for example. I'd like to see something like that for the rest as well. Let's see how things look once the barge models got an overhaul, which will probably happen at some point.

How about some unique-looking T3 mining ships?

I believe there is new models for the mining barges/exhumers coming soon, and bantam too. The fact that the retriever/mackinaw shafts and piston are not moving like they should since some weeks ago gives a good hint about that, plus this information appeared in a csm journal, the one talking about the mining command destroyer.

What about huge, extending drill deployable from underneath of the ship. Edges of which would be made of pickaxes to greatly emphasize the role of the ship.

Would a 'blingy' exhumer really fit in with the theme of being an industrial ship anymore than adding 'bling' to a RL excavator would?

(Setting one's sights on being a 'pro' miner might end in disappointment.)

What difference would varied design make? AFK is AFK regardless, so no one will be looking at their exhumer anyway.

1st my first day back as code, and you welcome me back with this garbage!?!?!?!?!?

You're on the red pen list. But good news friend! Now you don't have to worry about how your exhumer looks because you soon won't be flying one.

It's been a while since I've flown one, but don't they LITERALLY gout flames out of them when you're flying them?
I mean seriously, fire. They spew fire.
Or at least they did.
How awesome is that?
(yeah, I actually used to watch my ship when I was mining... between jams on the D-scan)

I don't do AFK and when I go mining it's with 3 Skiffs with full loadouts of Hammerhead 2's. I love it when Code arrives only to find themselves target locked with fifteen HH2's looking at them.

What you shoulda done, is, skilled for a Legion, then strapped on a nullifier and some modulated deep core mining lasers, then flew like a bat outa Hell into Providence and found some Mercoxit to mine.

I mean.... if you really want to look cool while mining.

Of course, you have to play the Beverly Hillbilly's theme music repeatedly while doing this.

I'd use the Rorqual model for the T2 barges. It's not like it'll ever actually be a useful ship (no matter what CCP says) so we might as well get some use out of the model.

Plus its size would allow it to sidle up to a rock and swallow it whole. Tell me that wouldn't be a cool animation.

If it then started literally munching on the rock while making nomming noises I would totally go back to mining.

I can kind of see where he's coming from, but I don't see this as an issue, more of a gripe. Most, if not all other, T2 ships are visually not that dissimilar to the T1 hulls they're based on, with the chief exception being in some small and minor details to help seperate them from the T1 line. The Golem has a differently shaped bow and the "wings" are at altered angles for instance. The Cerberus also has a different bow compared to the Caracal and Navy variant. The Falcon and Rook have various different visual structures strung about their hulls that not only separate them from the Blackbird, but the are even different from one another. True that the Exhumers are just the Barges with different paint at least visually, but then again, so what? JF's last I checked don't look that different from their Freighter brethren either.

For one thing, the visual differences between T1 and T2 ships are not indicative of their mechanical differences nor does it have any impact on usefulness or viability in the field and at their intended task. Just because one ship is mostly just a different SKIN doesn't mean it is not a completely different ship under the hood so to speak, nor any less relevant of an upgrade from it's T1 origin. It is unfortunate we as players don't have more control over the visual look of ships, be it in terms of SKIN's or simply the shape and other various structural designs, but that's just the way it is in Eve. In my opinion, how they are or are not balanced and how useful they are in game are far more important than what they look like, or rather how different they look in this case. With the upcoming Citadel release and likely more changes to follow, I'm sure CCP's art department -- likely much of CCP in fact -- has a full plate already, though I do agree that when they have the time that ship visual aesthetics should be continually developed and improved. If anything is true, I think the SKIN system and visual overhauls on ships over the last few years is good evidence that CCP is not taking ship aesthetics lightly. There's just a lot of ships to improve.

I don't necessarily disagree with the OP that Exhumers could use some visual TLC, though I'd argue that CCP just can't snap their fingers and make everyone happy at once. Unfortunately, as is with any development company in the gaming industry, much of CCP's hard work goes unnoticed by we players. Even changes or additions that sound like simple things could be monsters of work for CCP to accomplish, or just outright be impossible to make happen.

tl:dr

Sorry for the long read...I do tend to get into these heavy discussion moods and forget that I'm commenting in a forum, not chatting with friends on comms. Ship visuals, while important I agree, are a massive undertaking to keep up to date. As many ships are in the game now, CCP is continually adding more each year. It's why in the end ships will sometimes look out of date for a long while before getting their due justice. You just have to be patient. It's likely a lot of work and won't happen over night. When they get a chance, I'm sure CCP will revisit ships that have been a while since their last overhaul or visual face lift job. They probably just haven't had the time to specifically look into Barges and Exhumers, and their are other ship lines that are in the same boat, as it where.

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."
