Correct me if I'm wrong, but "solo" PvP-ers don't exist. I mean, sure one may show up and be one for real, but the likelihood is greater it's a bait ship with buddies nearby just waiting to pounce. The brave knights of EVE PvP are known for this tactic more than any other. Not surprisingly, you probably have been taken for one of these bait ships all along.
So...if you are out there on your gallant steed valiantly seeking honorable combat...remember:

The isn't Camelot. You're playing EVE Online.

Some people still solo. You've just gotta be aware of your surroundings.

The point being, possible sparring partners probably flee at the sight of a solo pilot obviously loitering for a fight for fear they really aren't SOLO.

It's not that YOU are solo...which you obviously are...it's why do people flee when they see me???
Assuming I've bathed and brushed my teeth.

I think I remember the day you actually linked that loss in-game.

Try not to solo in the most dangerous part of Eve, for starters. Don't be shy and join the groups/fleets. Second, find a low sec station well stocked and you will likely not be camped in there by hostiles.

Set up comms. Fly cheap while you learn. Always fit an mwd unless you are sure about positioning or you are setting a trap.

Last. Align out when uncertain. Warp out if you get confused.

FW is about being in a team. A wolf pack. Things happen so fast in small ship combat that VoIP is almost a requirement. Yet forming a fleet for a small group is better than nothing. If you are within a plex, you have at least 30 seconds before combat to relay information the moment something comes up on short. Two shin kickers can sometimes get the best of a brawler.
