Just to point out that something intentionally put in is not a defect. And I want my kb [kill-bong] back! Not only have you removed it you've dismissed it so callously in the patch notes.

Make it configurable by ship type, so everyone can decide for themselves what is gongworthy and what isn't. I for example would keep the gong for titans and maybe motherships.

Sounds more like one of those achievement systems the consoles do. Next, we'll be asking for an achievement system for Eve. CCP certainly would never run out of things to tie them to; think about it. I can hear it now...

Player kills a Titan, "Gong!" 100G: God Slayer (Make your first Titan kill!)
Player pods another player, "Gong!" 50G: Broken Eggs (Pod another player for the first time!)
Player gets podded, "Gong!" 5G: Down but not out... (Die then return anew!)
Shoot at a neutral in High/Low Sec, "Gong!" 25G: Criminal Intent (Aggro another player without provocation)
Be shot and killed by a neutral in High/Low, "Gong!" 5G: Enjoy your stay (Welcome to Eve!)

Alright, I think I know how this happened, some guy in CCP says "hey boss can I add a sound effect when a target dies?"
The boss looks disapprovingly at the employee but doesn't have the heart to tell him it's the single worst idea he's ever heard for the game in 12 years of development. Not expecting anything ever to come of it the boss dismissively says "Yeah. sure."

Some poor fellow at CCP has one major contribution to EVE. The gong. And it was removed after one day and labelled a defect.

A moment of silence for this guy. Maybe break the silence with a gong.

If brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough.

As silly as that is, if it gets people out into space trying to kill a titan or killing neutrals it can't be all bad.

That being said, please don't take me too serious when I'm badposting, I didn't get the chance to hear the gong even once ingame and I don't care either way. For me it's just one of those funny little stories to tell our grandchildren: "I still remember, back in the day when CCP deleted our boot.ini and played a gong on every kill..."

It was removed because it was almost universally hated - check the March feedback thread.

As to why it wasn't made optional - too much work for something that shouldn't have been added in the first place.

I'm going to pretend you're not just trolling because I generally don't feed the trolls, but if you were, good job in getting me to respond.

No worries, Neuntausend. I was being silly with it. I was more or less toying with the idea of the gong sound being like the sound effect of an achievement notification that pops up in an Xbox 360 game. Not that I disliked it so much as the sound effect seemed...well, odd I guess, similar to the moment when you're fully immersed in a game only to get a sudden and immersion-breaking sound effect followed by a notification stating you got some gamer score points for doing something. The fact that they added an effect didn't bother me, though the sound itself just didn't sound Eve-like to me admittedly.

On another note, I'm actually a little surprised no one has (at least that I'm aware of) suggested achievements for Eve. Maybe someone has and I just missed it or maybe there are not a whole bunch of players in Eve who care much for the idea of them. I don't either, all they are pretty much good for is bragging rights and I'm not really a bragging type myself, but I know there are a healthy number of players on both the PC and console side who actually like the trophy/achievement concept.

If CCP ever seriously pursued implementing an achievement system, I'd wouldn't oppose it. Like you said, if it gives people something to gun for, why not?

It's been suggested and quite thoroughly shot down by nearly everyone. This is not a game for any form of achievement system. No sandbox game should ever have achievements. What is an achievement for one player would be laughable to another.

I would vehemently oppose any sort of achievement system in EVE, leave that stuff for WoW.
