Issues, Workarounds & Localization

Under Shortcuts > Combat. There is a binding for "Select" (Default: Shift). What is the difference between using the shift modifier and simply left-clicking on anything. Both seem to do the same thing. Why does the select binding exist?

After being gone for a considerable time I've noticed that some new functionalities have been added while some have been changed. Consequently I've resolved that my prior key-binding overhaul will have to be scrapped and remade from the defaults. While taking an inventory of everything that will be changed, figuring out what functions must be maintained, I'm running into some confusion.
