o/

So bare with me here if this has already been discussed, I couldn't find anything towards this one on teh forums.

I love the EVE Online Star Map. I'm sure I'm not the only one. It's like being a kid again and watching space movies with 3D space maps in the control room of a star cruiser or some such.

Don't lie, you, like me, have on occasion opened the map and started spinning it and zooming in and out and just crack a goofy grin.

But this leads directly to the problem. In order for you to really get your bearings (in a 3D sense) you have to spin the map. And usually more than once per session.

I'm sure some will say, "just use the flattened view, it's easier." That may be true, however...

I want my cake and get to eat it too. And I want it to sing happy birthday to me before I do it.

The star map should auto spin, ever so slowly. It would give it some real perspective. Try it now with your mouse. Yes the blurries in the beta map (which looks great compared to the old) help a bit but not like a constant, slow spin would.

Of course there should be settings; direction, speed, focused or not, etc.

So spin the thing up! Make us kids again. Kids with legit space-movie starmaps.

Cheers

Get lost with that useless eye candy! The new map is already hard enough to use and should CCP remove the old map in the same fashion as they will replace the old camera with this garbage of a new camera, they virtually make a core functionality of the game unusable. Adding more useless and outright harmful features such as this to the new map will only worsen the situation.

http://3dvrm.com/eve/ here is what you are looking for. Download it, launch it and don't move your mouse. The map starts rotating gracefully. Now get out with your "suggestions".

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.

I highly doubt they're going to completely get rid of the current camera as well as I highly doubt they'd make you look at a spinning map with out giving you the option to stop the spinning.

These things are called 'options.'

And while yes, there are some good and bad features of the new systems, i think 'unusable' is a tad bit on the end-of-days side of the spectrum. They won't break EVE and life will go on, I promise.

It'd just be a cool, albeit OPTIONAL, feature.

Options = good
Stuck in your ways and chaining everyone else down with you = bad

... you do realise we are talking about CCP here right,

you must be aware how they feel about options by now surly.

It is now time to take the next step, which is to turn the new camera on by default on TQ. Since changes to fundamental parts of core gameplay systems can be delicate, we’ve decided to keep the option of reverting to the old camera for about 1 month as of now.

I cannot use the new map without making my game lag and partially freeze because CCP is too stubborn to make bookmarks display as they do in the old map (only in the system view).
Information visualization is unusable because there is no granular differentiation between data increments, in particular low values (Pilots in Space in last 30 minutes shows a mess of yellow on the map and does not differentiate between 1 person or 20 people in a system. The old map does.
The system view when you click on a system makes it utterly hard to see gate connections to other surrounding systems because you see the star system's planet orbits now and gate connections are moved around to match the gate positions in the system, as well as the bright light of the stars in this system view outshines the gate lines or even parts of the info.
The Map starts off where you clicked last, not where you are right now. Having to click the Center On Me button every time I open the map is unusable for me.
I also do not understand why CCP split the UI into 2 corners, manipulation of data left, search text box right. Makes no sense.
On the other hand, the new map also tries to show way too much info. The old map only shows you system names and constellations around the focused on system, the new map shows system names, constellation names all over the place in the focus area and beyond the system. That clutters the UI and makes zooming and panning laggy.
Worst of all, lots of info and data can't be displayed at all because there is no option. I am a huge fan of My Information -> My Fleet Members in Space, but that's not even available.

And do not get me started on the new probe scanner.

Hey like I said, there's good and bad to the new map. Completely agree with some of your points (though i don't seem to have any lag issues myself) especially your point on the map showing too much info.

Which is where slowly, a crawl even, rotating the map around the y axis of your focal point could add some depth, making it a little easier for your brain to sort through the, probably inevitable, clutter.

Definitely right about sys map in star map. If i wanted to see that i'd go to sys map. Put that thing in a separate window or something.

And probe scanner. That thing is awful.

But hopefully they'll iron these things out. There's reasons for doing a beta one of which being to get feedback. And while they can't make all sides happy, i doubt they do betas to dilute any sense of guilt on their part for making anyone unhappy. And it's certainly not to test. They have other servers for that. If they actually don't care it's easier to change it and say "We did it, if you like it, great! If not, deal with it or we can point you to the nearest unsubscribe button."

Which is bad business and CCP, more than anything, wants your money. Period. And the best way to do that is to make the majority happy. Whether the majority is right or wrong, dumb or smart.

It's just a little eye-candy is all. Eye-candy sells. And if they're going to **** the monkey, they might as well pierce it's ears and give it some aviators...
