This. Fleet fights are so intense, and usually all but one sided as there is more time for tactical maneuvers and surprises than during a 30s solo fight.

Regarding solo, the important point is to engage only on your terms, never just sit in a plex waiting for players engaging you ... 90% of the players entering an occupied plex know what they are doing, means they know the trick to win. With killboards, everybody knows what you are usually flying ... except if you do not Twisted.

Once I saw a veteran player with a PvP Astero cloaking near a plex. I knew his fit and therefore refitted my Svipul as a counter, and entered the plex ... the Astero took the bait engaging me and was toast. Afterwards, the pilot told me he checked my killboard and thought to give it a try because I lost a couple of Autocannon-Svipuls with MWD fit, which are vulnerable to scram-kiting.

Running around hiding from people that have bigger sticks then you with the occasional " WHOLLY CRAP! THAT GUY HAD A SMALLER STICK THEN ME!!!!! Whack whack whack whack hahahahaha" While there friend with a bigger stick then you sneaks up behind you.

Reading about your experiences makes me feel a bit more hope again! Perhaps I can get more exciting fights when I've joined a good corp!

It seems I have been a bit misinterpreted though, for starters I have already set my eyes on a corp, just not got around to contacting them yet! So my plan is not to look for 1v1 fights and flying solo only. Secondly I also love the thrill of the hunt as Neuntausend mentioned earlier. I definitely agree it can be more fun than the fight it self!

Thanks for the hint about "Spectre Fleet", I'll be sure to check that out asap! Sounds like a good place to hang around til I'm setup in a new corp!

I'll check out alliance tournaments and red vs blue as well, sounds like there could be some exciting fighting going on there! And perhaps a great place to learn pvp from.

All in all, judging from your info, it seems the main reason I'm having a bit of a bad time is because I'm flying solo. Sounds like smaller fleet battles can be really fun! I'm gonna have to swap into that pvpcorp asap!

Huge thanks everyone for sharing your experience with me, I really appreciate it! And I'm definitely not giving up yet. I've got a strong urge to try out fighting in fleets with a corp, that sounds like great fun!

My most exhilarating PVP was as a newbie in a newbie corp when we had wars with other small corps. 10-15 vs 10-15 and losing mattered not only to me but to us.

One of my best PVP memories was a random war against Eve University. Over 4 billion ISK exploded on each side, we had many different fights against different targets, from newbies to veterans. From easy ganks to getting our ***** handed to us by a squad of veterans. It's silly... but a single hisec war turned out to be more fun then we had in FW space in a looooong time.

The dominant mode of PVP game play in every space and style that I have seen over seven years is simply outnumbering the opposition and bringing more force to bear than they can.

If clever play ever happens, not only have I never seen it, but it is certainly the rare exception not the rule.

People do not want fair fights they might lose. Only impatience on their part will drive them into an encounter they are not guaranteed to win.

There are times you are PvPing for the fun of it, don't caring if you lose or win, taking any reasonable fight. Of course there are also times where you PvP for the win, to grab the loot, defend your space, take others space, or wave your e-peen. The different groups in EvE weight those categories differently.

It's more an observation than obfuscation.

If you like going around in circles, you will have fun riding a merry go round. If you don't, then you won't. Eve is much like a merry go round in that regard.

That's not to say that solo can't be fun, but it's basically EVE on hard-mode. With a little bit of planning you can actually take on veteran players and come out on top sometimes. Nothing feels better than killing a 2003 player flying something shiny in a cheap ship with a trick they weren't expecting. IMO FW isn't as good for this as it used to be because it seems like everyone and their mother has a link ship boosting their "solo" frigate these days. But that will be done away with soon which will be a wonderful day for FW pilots everywhere...

As someone who absolutely sucks at PvP, the most fun I have had has been in T1 ships with a surprise move. I'm a big fan of 'built it myself' - i.e. I don't look for fits and I've never been accused of being an EFT warrior. Consequently, I've had some absolutely terrible fits...and when they worked it was always hilarious.

Anyways, folks have already said this so I'll just use my two cents to repeat it:

1) If you fly solo, it's a lot like fishing: if you don't like sitting around doing nothing 95% of the time, you'll hate it even when you get the 5% amazing catch. If you like fishing, embellish your stories. Always.

2) Flying with a gang is only as much fun as the gang: camping is fun to those who like camping, roaming is fun to those who like roaming, and baiting is fun...etc. Find what you like to do and then find a gang that likes to do it. Word of advice: if you found an awesome fight (win or lose), offer to team up with that competitor! Some of the best folks I've flown with over the years I met at the wrong end of an autocannon.

3) If you want the 'Epic EvE Commercials' fights, make a lot of isk because they cost a lot of isk. People fly T2 because that's where those fights are at. It's a requirement. You gotta be a big dog to play with big dogs. If that's your cup of tea, start researching how to make the isk or just join an alliance. Reference #2.

4) You can never go wrong with duels if you just want cheap fights - and I mean isk and fairness cheap. Get an alt to even the tables or, as Cara said, have a surprise for that would-be contender to at least make it funny. I took a 1v1 with my merlin against a dramiel in Jita some years ago...with the full intent of losing, but dropping his shields and armor enough his super fit would get ganked by observers. Which he did. If you like ruining somebody's day, give it a shot.

If all else fails, play EvE as a carebear/nullbear and get your PvP fix in another space game. I hear Star Trek Online isn't half bad. Fly Safe(ish)! o7
