Returning player got questions about mining, production and research

Hi there

I reopened my account in December, and a couple days ago I opened a trial account which is now fully activated. I have 2 computers I can play on, so my plan is to use 2 accounts/computers. My corp lives in null sec, and in an area which good mining and production options. The char on the new account I want to make into a salvager/miner/refiner/producer/researcher (if possible). The main account will be either support miner, or ratter/guard for the second account miner (main is combat speced with high probing skills).

In this regard I have some basic questions I need answer to to get me started:
1) Living in low sec and in area with a industial part of the alliance, there should be good options to mine etc. Yes I have done some research (like this page http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Mining ), but I need to have the skills etc lined up before I leave Jita. I will most likely use Injectors to get the second char up to about 5mill skill points to begin with (ISK is a problem sadly). What are the skills and ships I need to do this (mining)?

2) What skills do I need to be able to do good reprocessing or minerals, and production of items?

3) When it comes to salvaging, I have planned to be able to fly a Cormorant salvager/assist DPS when ratting, and a Noctis salvager. But are Salvager II really worth getting the skills for? Are there other skills then Salvage and Salvage Drones that helps?

4) Back in 2007 and onwards when I played, I set my main char up with a research agent. Back then you could win BPOs etc in a lottery (which are long since ended), and made standing points, and could do some delivering of goods to speed things up. I still got a message from that agent, but no idea what the point is any more. What can these research agents do/give?

5) Are research agents, ref nr 4, still used? When people are researching BPOs(?), what is that? Are agents still involved? Since I will be living in null sec, a lot of travelling around to agents will not be an option. Will be bound to an area/region/few constallations.

6) What is a suggested setup for 2 accounts in this regard? Bear in mind that my main is a combat char with 92+ mill skill points. Gass mining is also an option, due to probing skills in the main char. Is there only 2 gass miners, the frigates? Nothing bigger?

7) Is it better doing planetary mining? Since I will be in null sec, with some limit to number of planets/moons, I guess not...

PS! I can, if there is a point in it, keep my new second account out of corp, in high sec. If I need to do some agent stuff etc, but I prefer not to.

https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Invention
http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Mining_101

According to these guides it may be better to have the main char do Inventions in the future, since he already got several of the needed skills. And it looks like they are not the same skills as needed for production/mining.

1. For mining skills, look at the Mastery and required skill progessions for the ORE mining ships, Venture (frigate), Procurer/Retreiver/Covetor (mining barges), Skiff/Mackinaw/Hulk (exhumers). Get the mastery certs to level 3 at least, 4 if you can.

2. This (reprocessing and production) is a completely different set of skills, especially for production, though there is some overlap. Look at the certificates for resource processing (Reprocessing, Resource Harvesting, and Salvaging), and production (Manufacturing Ops and Tech 1 Manufacturing, you can ignore the "advanced" stuff for now). Again, to level 3 at least.

3. If you're going to fly a Noctis, salvage drones will not be very useful IMO. I use them for missioning when I don't want to take the time to go get my Noctis. Again, check the "Mastery" certs for the Noctis.

4/5. Research Agents give you "research points" you can redeem (from the agent) for datacores, which are needed for T2 invention or can be sold. level 4 agents will give you about 95 RPs a day, plus they'll give you a courier mission about once a day for another 95 RPs (less for lower level agents). It's not as lucrative as it used to be, but it's not much work either (you don't have to do the missions if you don't want to). You could use a JC to do the running around for these missions if you want.

6. I would not do gas mining in anything bigger than a frigate, though I suppose you could.

7. I don't have any experience with PI, so I won't comment on it. :-)

Thanks for the reply.

I used several hours the past weekend planning skills, buying injectors and skilling up the alt account. Got a package of Plex, sold them and bought Injectors. Even though I had to think it over several times before coming to the conclusion, it had to be done, or wait for weeks with training.

The alt will be at about 6,5 mill skill points, and as far as I can see I have covered all bases, except one:
Which minerals to mine? I have some feedback from alliance people, but also want to ask here; Which minerals/ore should I focus on to begin with?

So far I have trained Gass and Ice mining. Which others should I focus on to begin with?

A lot depends on where you mine. Assuming hisec, and from memory, you should concentrate on Veldspar and Scordite. More specific data on the value of various ores are available at http://ore.cerlestes.de/index.html#site:ore.

You used injectors to skill up a mining alt??? Do you have any idea how long that will take to get your isk back?

That is more or less correct yes.

She can fly a rail Caldari detroyer, all frigs, good salvage skills, high Engineering skills, good Noctis skills, good Procurer skills, good Venture skills, high Gas and Ice mining skills, almost full Veldspar, 2 other higher grade minerals to skill 3 spec, a lot of drone skills (all races), about 7 mill skill points in total when I am done skilling (most likely tonight). Do not remember what more I have focused on.

The main char is almost full combat spec, with some other skills mixed in, like high probing/scanning. The second account I wanted to make a miner/reprocesser/salvager/producer. Will also skill up so I can fly a good cruiser or BC, most likely with some logistics mixed in, so I can duo all anamolies/expeditions etc.

I had no intention of making just 'another combat alt', I need to have more mixed chars. And its not a bad idea at this time, with MANY people removing their Mining skills etc AND citadels just around the corner, not bad timing at all...not at all...

Personally I think until you second account is good at combat stuff its most likely a wise idea to keep it out of missions ect.

Any missions/anom a 95+ Mil toon is running will most likely insta pop a destroyer unless you watch it like a hawk and keep traversal. If you do watch it like a hawk you are most likely not paying enough attention to your main and whatever extra DPS you second account is adding will most likely be negated.

Regarding the mining, if you get all of the reprocessing skills to level 2 you can use T1 crystals for mining. That will keeping you going until you have time to train the stuff you focus on mainly. if you are mining in a fleet with corp mates sometimes you have to mine what is around or be excluded.
