Basically this. Be careful what you click in Fleet/Local chat. The IGB isn't going to catch all that nasty stuff that a proper browser will protect you from. CCP is aware it's bad and they want to remove it but are just waiting for the functionality to be properly replaced. In the meantime, it's up to us to use it responsibly. It's not the browser giving you the virus, it's whatever link you clicked.

Assuming that was actually the cause. And yeah, if it's a brand new machine the easiest way to be sure is usually to wipe it.

One other thought, did you download any third party programs? EFT in particular uses a nasty download site with a lot of fake download buttons and potential for adware etc. I always use the alternative mirror link because it's much less shady.

Did you install Common Sense 2016? Are you using non-free browsers?

Could be related. I do not know why the launcher would act as a webpage, that seems defective.

The launcher having a browser component isn't unusual, pretty much every game launcher that includes an RSS feed and promo material from the devs, like the videos you get in the Eve launcher, has one through necessity. You might want to take a look at your hosts file too.
