EVE New Citizens Q&A

Hey all,

As some of you may know from my other thread, I am new to EVE, still screwing around in the trial.

So far I've been purchasing stuff via the marketplace (Probes, Probe Launchers, repair modules, etc). But I noticed that often times the things I was buying were located at other stations, sometimes multiple jumps away.

So I have 2 questions surrounding this.

1. Is there no way to buy things and have them "Shipped" to me, so that I don't need to make multiple jumps to pick them up?
2. When I pick them up, if I put them in my ships inventory, then jump and dock to another station, and put that item in my item hangar. Will I be able to access the items anywhere I dock? Or will it be left at that station, and every time I want to use it I need to go back there?

Your advice is much appreciated... I foresee it being weeks, maybe months before I can say I am comfortable with all of the game mechanics.

I guess once I get a hang of all the constellations and everything I'll decide on a "base station"... right now I basically have zero sense of location in the game lol... I guess this is normal?

So additional to very good answered your questions by ISD Fractal, I want to give you some more hints:

Your location in the Game:
You are in solar system inside a huge Galaxy. You can see the whole Galaxy by opening the Galaxy Map
(Button Map or Map Beta in the EvE Icon Menu at the left side of Screen).
You see its's Stars, the connection of the Stars via Jumpgates there and can configure other things
via the Galaxy Map Menue (coloured circle on top of the Map) to mark in Galaxy.
In the solar Systems space stations are set near moons which circle around a planet.
You sitting inside such a station.

For buying and selling there exist 5 bigger trade hubs in the Galaxy where you can buy most of
the things of the game. These trade hubs are stations in the solar Systems 'Jita' in Caldari Space,
'Dodixie' in Gallente Space, 'Amarr' in Amarr Space, 'Hek' and 'Rens' in Minimatar Space.
Most Players buy their stuff central by flying with a hauler to one of the trade hubs and buy there.

Select a base station for yourself in any given System. Perhaps in a sytem where you find
Ore you like to mine or in a System where Mission agents available you like to do missions for.
Transport your assets to your selected base with a hauler.

If you do the tutorial missions (Carreer Agents), you get haulers (and other ships and stuff) for free
from completing their missions. Press F12 key and look there in Help Menue for Carreer Agents.
All 5 career agents are in same station. After you got the haulers (Badger in your case) you can use them
for hauling your stuff to your base.

As it's been said, there is no teleportation in EVE; if you buy an item at station X, that's where it will be. The toolbar on the left (ingame) should have an Assets icon, that will list everything that you own everywhere, but you still have to go there to pick up the items.

If you want the items transported to you, you will have to open the Contracts interface and set up a Courier Contract, offering to pay someone to transport the stuff to you. The courier contracts are insured (you set up a collateral fee that is equal to the value of the item, and if the guy gets attacked and his ship blows up, that fee goes to you). They're also pretty cheap, considering the risk of transporting such items yourself (typically, for high-sec courier jobs, 150k ISK per solar system traversed).

This is why trade hubs exist; people go to Jita to buy everything because it's all in one place and they can buy a ship AND all its fittings there. Some regions, however, are remote and don't have a trade hub, so in that case you can either travel to a trade hub or buy from wherever it's available and go pick it up. Out in 0.0 space, the trade-oriented characters can make a huge profit by setting up trade hubs, because the area is so remote from Jita. Of course, they have to transport all the stock all the way to the middle of nowhere, past all the pirates along the way. It requires the higher end transport ships (jump freighters, cloaky transports, etc.).

This is normal. Remember nearly everything in EVE is player run, compared to other games. So in other games where your stuff can be automatically shipped to you (or just instantly appear somewhere else) in EVE that is a player run activity. There are groups of people who make all of their ISK doing nothing but running hauling services for other players.

The biggest trade hubs are in the systems of

Jita (largest by far)
Amarr (second largest)
Dodixie
Rens
Hek

Set up a home base somewhere near one of those, and once/twice a month or so take a hauling ship to drop off/sell in a trade hub as well as buy what you need. You will also generally get better prices in a hub than outside one, since prices are set by players as well.

Let's make EVE real (as it is), if you order something over the phone or internet, does it magically appear at your home? No, it has to be shipped there (or picked up by you). Same counts for EVE

1. You can "hire" other players to move stuff for you. Or you have to do it yourself.


Again, let's make EVE real. Say I have 2 houses (I don't cause I play EVE so don't have the money for it), if I leave my phone in house A, will I be able to use it in house B? Nope, same counts with EVE.

2. Each station has it's own inventory, what is in station A, is not in Station B. You have to bring it with you.

Words to fly by

I know the mechanics have been discussed in detail. I just wanted to point out to the OP that the market in Eve is a huge part of the game. The costs associated with having to get things to market are a huge part of that as well.

Without getting into too many details, let's just say that as you play the game you will begin to understand how complex this gets. Where you make things affects how much it costs to build them and the transportation costs figure into that whole mix. Coming up with an effective and efficient business model is a real thing in this game.

Being able to put something in one station and have access to it at all other stations would be literally game breaking.

oh i agree, literally anywhere else in space i would say you should make a point of it.
