I've been scanning for hours in high, low, and wh space but I haven't found a single gas site Sad

Am I doing it wrong?

quite possibly.

The only gas sites that will spawn in HiSec are Mykoserocin clouds used for Synth booster production; and they're not really worth harvesting, topping out at approx ~ISK14m/Venture load. What's more these clouds only appear in specific constellations. So if you weren't scanning a hotspot constellation, you were never going to find one anyways.

Lowsec and 0.0 can spawn the far more valuable Cytoserocin clouds, used in producting Standard, Improved and Strong variant combat boosters.

Now, Wormhole gas clouds are of the Fullerite variety and they're used in the rather convoluted T3 ship production process. Any class of wormhole may contain a gas cloud, higher class wormholes may spawn higher classes of gas cloud. A Barren Perimeter Reservoir (C50 & C60 gas) is worth considerably less than a Vital Core Reservoir (C320 & C540 gas), but while a Barren will spawn in a C1, a Vital is restricted to much further down the rabbit hole in C5/6 class holes.

Not every wormhole will contain a gas site. Some will contain many, some will have none.

I just started gas-harvesting to try something new, I can say I've found plenty in wormholes.

I've mostly explored C3 wormholes.

Note that if the wormhole is inhabitated the locals will probably be running the sites themselves, thus despawning them. I don't know how often they re-spawn.

I know that CCP changes spawn rates from time to time and likely without always informing us. Also lots has been said about this and I've always found it hard to separate fact from speculation. Further I've not spent time in wormholes in years.

All of those qualifiers out of the way the last that I heard wormhole spawn rates were kind of convoluted and mysterious. The best that we could figure from our experimentation was that when you live in a hole you drive down the spawn rates. It seemed like we'd find a hole with several sites and put up a PoS and live there and the site would respawn at a decent rate for a bit but the longer and harder that we farmed them the less often that they would spawn until sometimes nothing would spawn for a day or two.

Again it's been years since I've lived in a worm hole and I fully understand it could just me trying to make sense of the RNG gods but that is the best that me and my corp could come up with at the time.

That's weird...gas sites aren't in every wormhole, but enough where you should have found a bunch in several hours...huh...something is wrong but not sure what, sorry.
Skip hisec for gas.
When you do find a gas site in a wormhole, keep in mind that the sleepers will show up 20 minutes after warp is initiated to the site. Gas ships don't do well against sleepers. :)

Any recommendations on how to fit a Venture to escape sleepers and lowsec gankers using only skills available to trial users?

After scanning a WH gas cloud down, always warp to it at 100km, in case someone else spawned the site and sleepers are already there. If they are, get out immediately. They will never spawn directly on the cloud itself, and typically spawn 60k + away from the clouds. Just keep spamming d-scan to watch for probes (ie, someone else in the WH), get out when you see anyone/anything on d-scan. As soon as the sleepers show up, you will be able to warp off before they can target you, just warp out immediately when they spawn.

Ventures are cheap enough you will pay for lost ships several times over with gas mining anyway, assuming you lose a few.

You already got some good suggestions from people above. In regards to fitting - fit cheap. Stabs and whatnot will not save you from dedicated hunters, so you might as well save the isk for the next Venture.

The most important piece of gear is the t2 gas harvesters, as they will double the amount of gas per cycle.

NEVER warp to the ordinary gas sites in you venture. Ordinary sites always have sentry guns that will blow up your little venture when landing.

Sorry, but the Gas Harvesting skill cannot be trained on Trial Accounts.

As for escaping sleepers, warp disruption from sleepers only occurs in Instrumental Core Reservoirs. So you'll always be able to warp off in any other gas site. Personally, I fit my Ventures for a buffer shield tank and either warp out when sleepers show up, or pre-spawn and clear the site first in a combat ship.

I don't think there's anything one could really fit to a venture (or any other ship for that matter) that would even come close to being as effective of a defense as pilot situational awareness (especially D-scanning like a madman when in wormholes ).

Also a venture has +2 to warp core strength which makes you a lot more survivable in a WH as long as your paying attention.

Sometimes you are the squirrel and sometimes you are the nut. Today, you are the nut and the squirrel is hungry.
