Premature Data site de-spawn?

I was recently in null-sec running a Data site. (A normal no-NPC data site.)

I was hacking the final can, and someone came into local. I killed the hacking window before completion (first attempt) and flew about 20-25 km away from the nearest object, while cloaking up.

While waiting to see what the other player in local was going to do, I heard an ominous explosion. I looked behind me to see the entire site had de-spawned. (All objects and cans were gone, and the site was not on my scanner list any more.)

What condition did I trigger for the site to de-spawn? I still had my second attempt on the remaining can, which hadn't been opened yet... ?

Thanks!

This sounds, you had found a Ghost Site.

Unfortunately, I am positive this was not a ghost site. It was called Central Guristas Data Mining Site. There were no NPCs, and I had all the time in the world to hack the cans at a leisurely pace.

Someone had been there before you. An hour before or so.

This link tends to support the someone had been there before you theory since you state there was no NPC when you got there.

I think a lot of the Evelopedia entries on exploration sites are obsolete. A lot of sites were modified to no longer include NPCs. I think this was a year or two ago? I've hit other sites of this name with no NPCs and no bizarre de-spawn issues.

Not a big deal - was just curious if I ran into a bug or something.
